Historic Sites and a Varied Network of Trails

Fosdinovo combines historic sites, hiking trails, sweeping views, and a distinctive regional cuisine. This creates a varied mix of culture, outdoor activities, and culinary discoveries for planning your days. The most prominent highlights are Castello Malaspina, the route through the historic center, and the municipal trail network, which includes several well-known long-distance and hiking trails.

Castello Malaspina and Historic Traces

During a guided tour of Castello Malaspina, you can see small courtyards, Renaissance loggias, 16th-century portals, Romanesque columns, and magnificent halls. A route with explanatory panels also begins at the castle and leads you toward the historic center of Fosdinovo. This allows you to combine a visit to the castle with a walk through the town’s history without conflating the two experiences. The historical record reaches back to 1340: at that time, Castello Malaspina was transferred by the nobles of Fosdinovo to Spinetta Malaspina. Other notable testimonies include the Oratorio della Compagnia dei Bianchi, with its white marble façade from the second half of the 17th century, and the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Remigio, dating from the 13th century. The tomb of Galeotto I Malaspina is located in this church. In the vicinity of Fosdinovo, the Museo Audiovisivo della Resistenza offers multimedia historical insights and educational trails on the themes of the Resistance and the establishment of democracy in Italy. The museum visit therefore focuses on a different subject than the medieval and ecclesiastical history explored in the town.

Trails, Views, and Special Natural Features

Fosdinovo’s municipal trail network includes CAI hiking trails, two stages each of the Trekking Lunigiana and Sentiero dei Ducati, and a section of the Via Francigena. This provides several differently named trail systems for exploring the landscape. A walk near Le Prade offers views across the Magra Valley to the sea, as well as views of the islands of Palmaria and Tino. Another natural highlight is the Quercia Secolare near Posterla. It is one of the monumental trees of the Tuscany region and complements the viewpoints and trails with a single, particularly prominent landscape feature.

Wine, Chestnut Flour, and Festivals

Fosdinovo is part of the Strada del Vino dei Colli di Candia e di Lunigiana, where local wines can be tasted. Fosdinovo also produces Vermentino Colli di Luni Bianco DOC and extra-virgin olive oil. Typical dishes include Castagnaccio, Pattone, and Ciani; they are based on chestnut flour and give the local cuisine a distinctly individual profile. The festival dates also have different focuses: Ponzanello Illumina is held annually at the end of July, while the Festa Medievale takes place on the first weekend of July.
