Tendola between village history and Monte Nebbione

Tendola’s architecture includes arches, vaults, covered passages, and winding alleys. This combination of narrow paths and individual religious images gives the visit a clear local structure without requiring you to limit yourself to a single building. The religious architecture includes the parish church and the small chapel of San Rocco. The parish church is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Its interior features late Baroque architecture that was refurbished in the 19th century. The San Rocco chapel is located in the upper part of Tendola; an image of the Madonna is mounted above its portal. More recent and personal signs are also part of the village scenery. The Muretto dell’Amore displays the names and handprints of residents on cement tiles. A series of sculptures was created in 2006 as part of the “Tendola artistica” event and is distributed throughout the village. In the hamlet of La Preta, Tendola is also associated with events from the Second World War, particularly with Japanese-American soldiers known as Nisei. Views across the mountain ranges and Monte Nebbione

The named mountains include Pizzo d’Uccello and Monte Sagro. Donkeys, goats, and sheep graze in the surrounding area, so the landscape includes agricultural scenes in addition to distant views. The location on the provincial road connecting Fosdinovo and Soliera is also relevant for getting around locally. About one kilometer before Tendola, there is a rest area on the right side of the road with two marble benches. A natural spring emerges there at an artistically designed marble fountain depicting “Madre Natura.” The site is known as the Fontana della Piletta and also as the “Sorgente della Pace”; the work was created by the Carrara sculptor Luca Crocetti.

Hiking and cycling around Tendola

One route follows CAI Trail 286 along Monte Nebbione to the village of Le Prade after Tendola. The Museo Audiovisivo della Resistenza, which can be visited, is located nearby. An easy hiking route starts and ends at the Museo Audiovisivo della Resistenza, heads toward Tendola, and takes about 1.5 hours. This makes it possible to combine a museum visit with a manageable hike without overloading the route with additional stops. Another CAI hiking route reaches the village via a right-hand turn onto CAI Trail 296 after following CAI Trail 297. A historic cycling tour through the Lunigiana Storica reaches Tendola at kilometer 26. For further orientation in the surrounding area, you can also include Giucano, Carignano, Borghetto-melara and Marciaso.
