Marciaso and its historical traces
Accommodation in Marciaso
Marciaso appeals to travelers who want to discover Tuscany through the history of its individual places. Its cultural profile is shaped by several traces of the past: an 18th-century parish church, a surviving tower, historic entrance arches and memorial sites commemorating the Second World War. There are also historical testimonies in the square in front of the Oratorio dell’Opera. These different themes give a stay a specific historical focus and offer various perspectives on the town.
Church, tower and historical testimonies in the square
The Oratorio dell’Opera was built in 1748 and is now used as the parish church. The tower in the center of Marciaso is the only surviving remnant of the former manor house. The two buildings represent different chapters in the town’s history: the Oratorio continues to serve a religious purpose, while the tower recalls the former manor house. Marciaso’s past can therefore be explored through more than the history of a single building.
In the square in front of the Oratorio is a Madonna di Loreto dating from 1622. A Malaspina coat of arms from 1627 can also be seen in the same square. The dates place the two historical testimonies in chronological context; here, a religious image and a coat of arms also represent different forms of visible history. Those interested in religious art or historical symbols will find two specific points of interest in the townscape.
Traces of the former entrances have also survived. After the old entrance was destroyed, three historic entrance arches remained visible. Together with the centrally located tower, they tell of different aspects of the town’s history, without implying that the tower itself is the medieval castle. This distinction helps visitors consider the surviving architectural evidence and the lost historical traces separately.
War history and remembrance
Marciaso’s history also includes destruction: the new church, built around 1600, was destroyed during the Second World War. The traces of Marciaso’s medieval castle were also lost during the war. These are two different historical testimonies—a church from the early modern period and the remains of a medieval castle—and both were affected by the consequences of war.
The history of the Second World War also includes August 3: troops destroyed Marciaso and killed five elderly people who were in the town. The Lapide di Marciaso commemorates civilian victims of the Second World War. Architectural losses and the remembrance of people therefore stand side by side; a visit focused on the town’s history also involves engaging with its difficult chapters.
After the war, Marciaso was partially rebuilt. Quakers or Mormons from the United States who settled there helped with the reconstruction.
Surroundings and local tradition
The Bardine stream runs past Marciaso, adding a connection to the landscape alongside its historical themes. Nearby is Pontevecchio, where nine stele statues were discovered. Pontevecchio is a separate point of interest in the surrounding area, not a historical site within the town itself. Visitors interested in archaeological finds can bear this distinction in mind when considering the sights.
The historic Trattoria Circolo Arci in Marciaso is part of the local culinary tradition and offers menus featuring traditional dishes. As the business may change, check before visiting to see whether the offering is still available. This allows you to combine an interest in local history with a look at regional food culture, without suggesting that the two offer the same experience.
