Corezzo – Mountain Landscape, Trails and Local Traditions

Corezzo lies at an altitude of approximately 760 metres above sea level in the heart of the Foreste Casentinesi. Between meadows, small woods and gardens, an appealing and impressive mountain landscape unfolds. Those looking for a place in Tuscany with a clearly recognisable landscape and local character will find here not only nature, but also trails, crafts, local history and a well-established culinary tradition.

Trails with varied routes

CAI Trail No. 59 passes through Corezzo. Two CAI trails begin in the village of Corezzo: Trail No. 59 leads over the Passo di Serra to Bagno di Romagna, while Trail No. 56 connects with the GEA route below Poggio Magiovanna. From here, Trail No. 59 leads west to the hamlet of Frassineta and east to the hamlet of Serra. Several differently oriented trail connections are therefore documented in the village, without having to combine them into a single route. Trek 17 offers another option: a circular hike from Corezzo designated by the National Park. On the outward leg, it passes through Frassineta and Santicchio, and on the return leg through Serra. The landscape alternates between open valley areas, old fields and pastures, open oak woods and hazelnut groves. Corezzo is also connected to the Via Romea Germanica. From here, it leads along a mule track to the village of Frassineta; the old mountain village of Corezzo can be reached along a historic section of this route. This connection complements the local CAI trails with a historic route.

A location between valleys, sanctuaries and mountain villages

Corezzo lies on the road connecting Chiusi della Verna and Badia Prataglia through the valley of the Torrente Corsalone. The village is also located on the road between the Monastero di Camaldoli and the Santuario della Verna. These two described road connections place Corezzo within the mountain landscape and make clear that the village is connected both to the valley and to important destinations in the surrounding area.

Museum, stories and village traditions

Corezzo is part of the Ecomuseo della Vallesanta. The village school houses the museum “Stanza dei ricordi e delle sapienze manuali”. It is dedicated to research and practical projects in the field of meetings and workshops. An ancient Medici coat of arms can also still be seen on the wall of a building on the main piazza. The “Badalischio”, a mythical and legendary figure of the region, is part of the local oral tradition. In Vallesanta, reported apparitions attributed to it include those at Campo di Gostinello in Corezzo. A more recent tradition is the “Cantamaggio della Vallesanta”, organised in the first days of May by the children of the Corezzo school.

Tortello alla Lastra and August festivals

Tortello alla Lastra® is a typical gastronomic speciality of the mountains between Romagna and Tuscany. To prepare it, the dough is worked exclusively by hand and rolled out with a rolling pin into a thin sheet. Potato filling is spread over one half of the sheet; the filled Tortello alla Lastra® is then cooked on a slab of pietra serena. The Festa del Tortello alla Lastra takes place every year in August in Corezzo. It began in 1995 with six tables in the village square. The Sagra del Tortello alla Lastra is the most important event organised by Pro Loco Corezzo. During the Festa, the Mercatale della Vallesanta also takes place on 12, 13 and 14 August.
