Loro Ciuffenna combines art, a historic watermill and an impressive landscape on the Pratomagno. If you are looking for accommodation in Tuscany, you can combine cultural discoveries here with excursions to waterfalls and the landscapes of the Le Balze nature reserve. For families and mixed travel groups, the stay can be organised in different ways: one day can be dedicated to the museum, another to a longer hike or a regional speciality.

Art and History in Loro Ciuffenna

A special cultural point of interest is the Museo Venturino Venturi. It comprises seven sections organised around the main themes of Venturi’s artistic research. The artist donated 93 sculptures and drawings to the municipality of Loro Ciuffenna on the condition that a museum dedicated to his work be established. This means that the focus is not only on a collection, but also on the connection between the artist, the municipality and the founding of the museum.

Another cultural point of reference is the Archivio Venturino Venturi, which is open to visitors. Those interested in local history, art and the development of an individual artistic body of work can take these attractions into account when planning their day. Another distinctive structure is the Ponte Romanico, also known as Ponte Vecchio. It is located at the gorge of the Torrente Ciuffenna in Fondaccio, the oldest and most characteristic part of the town.

Le Balze, Water and Distinctive Landscapes

The landscape around Loro Ciuffenna reveals a distinctly different side of Tuscany from the famous art cities. Le Balze features formations created by geological erosion, including erosion gullies, balze and erosion pillars. The area forms a characteristic landscape of particular scenic and ecological interest. The Le Balze nature reserve lies in the upper Valdarno at the foot of the Pratomagno, between the Resco and Ciuffenna streams. It is jointly administered by Castelfranco di Sopra, Loro Ciuffenna, Pian di Scò and Terranuova Bracciolini.

The southern side of the Pratomagno massif around Loro Ciuffenna also offers opportunities for excursions among impressive waterfalls and clear pools. These landscape experiences are suitable for a more relaxed day of travel as well as for a more active itinerary. When looking for a hotel or other accommodation, you can therefore consider whether your trip should focus primarily on art, nature or a balanced combination of the two.

Travelling on Foot or by Bicycle

The Cammino dei Setteponti offers a clear choice between different travel speeds. On foot, the route can be completed in two or three days, and by bicycle in one or two days. It leads from Pieve di Cascia or Donnini to Buriano di Castiglion Fibocchi. The different time frames help you plan the route according to the time available and your preferred mode of transport. For a trip with several generations, it may make sense not to organise each day exclusively around a long distance, but to alternate cultural and landscape experiences.

Mill and Regional Specialities

Il Mulino combines technology, history and local processing. The mill was built around the year 1000 at the edge of a gorge on the Torrente Ciuffenna and is considered the oldest watermill in Tuscany still in operation. It is currently being renovated. The small museum contains three stone mills powered by a water-driven wooden mechanism. In recent years, only dried chestnuts have been ground there.

Another culinary experience is the Caccia al tartufo in the woodland around Odina. Participants can accompany a Lagotto as it tracks down and digs up truffles. Afterwards, freshly collected truffles are tasted with bread, oil and other dishes of the day.
