Pierle: Rocca, San Biagio and Trails to Monte Ginezzo

Pierle between Castle Rocks and Mountain Trails

Pierle combines impressive history with a landscape that can be explored on foot. Above the Mercatale valley, the Rocca di Pierle stands on a rocky outcrop considered an excellent viewpoint. At the same time, trails from Pierle lead up into the surroundings of Monte Ginezzo.

The Rocca di Pierle and San Biagio

The present-day Rocca di Pierle was built from 1371 onwards over an older structure documented as early as the 11th century. Today, the complex is a ruin. In recent years, stabilization work has been carried out to protect the structure and people. Its historical significance therefore lies not only in the surviving masonry, but also in the site's long development above the valley. Opposite the Rocca di Pierle stands the small Romanesque church of San Biagio di Pierle, outside the castle walls. Over time, a small village developed near the castle. The church itself dates back to the 11th century, was rebuilt in 1505 and further restored in the 17th and 18th centuries. The church has a gabled roof, a bell gable on the left and an apse covered with stone slabs. The local festival calendar includes the Feast of San Biagio on 3 February, when bread is blessed.

Hiking at Monte Ginezzo

A described hike to Monte Ginezzo begins at the church of San Biagio opposite the Rocca di Pierle. The route initially follows a wooded track and then a mule track to the 928-metre-high summit. From there, wide-ranging views extend over the Apennines, the Sibillini Mountains, Monte Amiata and Lake Trasimeno. The route thus offers a clear progression from a historical starting point through a woodland section to an open mountain panorama. The Sentiero della Rocca connects Pierle with [Sodo](Sodo) via Monte Maestrino, Monte Ginezzo, Portole and Croce di Sant’Egidio. It uses hiking trails CAI 562, CAI 50 and CAI 563. Its stops include the Rocca di Pierle, a paved road, chestnut groves, the meadows of Ginezzo, the Cerventosa dam and forests predominantly characterized by oak trees. The MAEC's collection of cultural routes also features the Sentiero della Rocca.
