Anghiari: Collections, Crafts and Historic Traces

If you would like to get to know a place through its history, museums and long-established traditions, Anghiari offers several different approaches. The town’s cultural side ranges from archaeological finds and weapons to religious buildings, textile crafts and historic routes. This allows you to shape your stay around individual, clearly distinct themes instead of visiting just one attraction.

An important starting point is the Museo Statale di Palazzo Taglieschi. The tour covers around 20 rooms across four levels and ends in a glazed loggia. From there, you can look down over the village of Anghiari. The collection includes numerous domestic and agricultural objects connected with the local traditions of the surrounding area. The visit therefore combines the spatial layout of the palace with objects from everyday and rural life.

Museums, Battle History and Local Crafts

The Museo della Battaglia e di Anghiari focuses on various historical periods. On display are prehistoric tools as well as local archaeological finds from the Etruscan, Roman and early medieval periods. This collection is supplemented by weapons dating from the 16th century to the end of the 19th century. The history of the town can thus be traced through both early settlement remains and military objects.

The Busatti workshop in Anghiari offers a different perspective. It is located in the basement rooms of Palazzo Morgolanti and continues to use old shuttle looms. A wide selection of particularly high-quality fabrics made from wool, hemp, linen and cotton is produced here. This makes the workshop a distinct focus within Anghiari’s cultural profile: the emphasis here is not on a collection of finished museum objects, but on a production method that is still in use.

The town’s religious history is also present in several places. The Museo della Misericordia is housed in the old Badia, the former abbey church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo. Since 1817, it had been the historic seat of the brotherhood. The origins of the Convento e Chiesa della Croce di Anghiari, in turn, are associated with the figure of Saint Francis.

Historic Routes and Outdoor Sites

To explore the area around the historic centre, there is an official tour of the sites associated with the battle. It begins in the historic centre of Anghiari and can be undertaken on foot or by bicycle. Another notable route is the Antica Via di Ronda. It was a historic path north of the walls of Anghiari and now leads through the former 16th-century monastery of Sant’Agostino.

One of the visible parts of the fortifications is the bastion that defines Anghiari’s eastern line of walls. Filippo Spina Vicario completed it in 1571. The memory of the event associated with Anghiari is still commemorated today with the Palio on 29 June. This date adds an explicitly calendar-based connection to the town’s history to the permanently accessible historical themes.

The Golena del Tevere also adds a landscape dimension to the picture. It includes various habitats with riverside vegetation, as well as valuable wetlands that formed from disused gravel pits in the floodplain.
