Castiglion Fiorentino – History, Landscape and Trails

Castiglion Fiorentino combines a small hill overlooking the broad Valdichiana Aretina with a historic centre full of visible traces from different eras. The historic centre has medieval walls, gates and lanes leading up to the Cassero and built onto an ancient Etruscan structure. The Cassero complex preserves its medieval defensive structure. One notable entrance is the Porta Fiorentina: the double gate consists of a rusticated outer sandstone portal and an inner opening with three arches, above which an image of Saint Michael is displayed. The film festival takes place every year in the last week of July in the Cassero Archaeological Area and includes open-air film screenings as well as talks and interviews with actors and directors. Around Ferragosto, the Vintage Festival brings the historic centre to life with vintage crafts, clothing and objects, live music and traditional menus. During Maggio Castiglionese, the entire month of May is dedicated to exhibitions of local food and craft products, demonstrations of agricultural machinery, and cultural events such as conferences and exhibitions. The Presepe vivente is usually performed on 26 December in the lanes of the historic centre and depicts, among other things, the court of Herod, Roman soldiers, shepherds, taverns and a fishing village.
