The Castello di Montecchio Vesponi was first mentioned in 1014. At that time, the fortified settlement was transferred from Farneta Abbey to the Marquises of Monte Santa Maria. Visits follow a set format: guided tours of the Castello are offered monthly, taking place on the second Sunday of each month. Participation is only possible with advance reservation. The Castello is located on the SR71 Umbro Casentinese between Castiglion Fiorentino and Cortona; this location also reflects its position in the landscape between the two towns.

Traditions in the Village

The Processione della Madonna Addolorata returns to Montecchio Vesponi as a traditional event. It passes through the village streets and includes seven staged depictions of the Passion of Christ. Numerous worshippers from surrounding villages take part. The procession is therefore not merely a single item on the programme, but an event with a distinctly communal character.

On Foot and by Bicycle through the Countryside

A different perspective is offered by the annual event “La camminata degli antichi sentieri castiglionesi”. It starts on Gran Duca Leopoldo Street in Montecchio Vesponi and covers more than 60 kilometres: 40 kilometres are completed on foot and 20 kilometres by bicycle. The format appeals to different levels of physical preparation and a range of interests, without being limited to just one form of transport. The focus is on discovering the rural countryside. The route passes through an area with historic villages and natural attractions. In this way, the event complements the castle’s cultural and historical focus with an active encounter with the surrounding area. If you would like your trip to include both historic sites and experiences in nature, you will find two clearly different reasons to visit here: the castle tour, which requires a reservation, and an annual trail event with sections on foot and by bicycle.
