Discover Pulicciano: Trails, History and Places of Remembrance

Pulicciano combines trails on Pratomagno with historic sites and memorials. The Sentiero della Memoria reaches Pulicciano and passes a memorial stone commemorating the massacre of the 29-year-old parish priest Don Bianco Cotoneschi and his sacristan; both had been taken hostage by German soldiers. If you would like to combine culture and outdoor activities in Tuscany, the village offers several clearly distinct points of interest.

Trails with different focuses

The Sentiero della Memoria runs below the slopes of Pratomagno and commemorates those who fell in the resistance. The circular trail from Pulicciano begins at the Church of Sant’Andrea and follows the markings for CAI trails no. 20 and 33. Another option for a trail directly in the village is the Via del Bacio, a footpath in Pulicciano. This allows you to distinguish between a culturally and historically focused route, a circular trail and a village footpath when making your selection, without mixing up the different themes. The CAI trail 920 Pratomagno, by contrast, clearly illustrates the changing landscape. It first passes through cultivated areas with vineyards and olive groves, then through deciduous forest and, higher up, through shrubland and grassland. At several points, the trail offers views across the Valdarno. This provides a clear picture of the landscape for your travel planning: the route combines agricultural sections with forest, higher-altitude vegetation and distant views. In the vicinity of Pulicciano, CAI trail 33 crosses the Romanesque bridge over the Faella stream on the section from La Lama to Villa di Pulicciano. The bridge was probably built in the 13th century and connects two valleys of Pratomagno. It is therefore not only part of the trail route but also an independent historical point of reference in the area around Pulicciano.

History, church and local remembrance

Pulicciano is mentioned as a castle from 1191 onward. The Church of Sant’Andrea a Pulicciano has been protected as an architectural monument since 17 April 2015 and historically belonged to the parish district of Scò. Near the church, the Monumento ai caduti was restored to preserve the historical memory. The Lapide di Pulicciano commemorates the killing of the parish priest Don Bianco Cotoneschi on 1 August 1944. Together with the Sentiero della Memoria, this creates a historical focus that can be explored through the trail, church and memorials. The Festa del Perdono is also held in Pulicciano as a recurring local festival. It complements the permanently visible historical testimonies with a recurring event in village life. For visitors who are looking not only for landscapes but also want to understand the history of a place, several different themes therefore come together in Pulicciano, without having to reduce them to a single attraction. If you would like to expand your selection beyond Pulicciano, other destinations include [Montebenichi](Montebenichi), [Subbiano](Subbiano), [Loro Ciuffenna](Loro Ciuffenna), [Terranuova Bracciolini](Terranuova Bracciolini), [Colcellalto](Colcellalto), [Bibbiena](Bibbiena), [Gricignano](Gricignano) and [Sodo](Sodo).
