Subbiano: Arno Riverbanks, Mills and Paths through Tuscany

Subbiano between the Arno, history and mountain landscapes

Subbiano shows Tuscany from a side where river landscapes, historic paths, churches, mills and wooded ridges stand close together. Old buildings and former watermills line the left bank of the Arno. Added to this are the Alpe di Catenaia, with its oak, chestnut and centuries-old beech forests, the Prati della Regina and Monte Castello. Those wishing to combine culture and nature in a manageable travel itinerary will find a wide variety of points of interest here.

Churches, castles and archaeological evidence

An important cultural site is the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Visitazione, which was built in the early years of the 13th century. The interior contains a fresco of the Coronation of Mary by Giovanni Bassan, a Descent from the Cross created by him above the church portal, and a wooden crucifix from the 17th century in the apse. The Chiesa di Santa Lucia in the hamlet of Poggio D'acona also dates from the 13th century. The Castello di Valenzano was reconstructed from 1870 onwards in Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romantic forms with elements of medieval Sienese architecture. The complex includes the small church of Santa Maria a Valenzano. The Ristorante al Castello has a panoramic terrace and a wine cellar with wines from the region. Another historic trace leads to the Torre Santa Flora near Ponte Caliano. The tower was built between the 12th and 13th centuries as a defensive tower to protect the Arno and the road. The Centro di Documentazione della Cultura Archeologica preserves archaeological finds from the Subbiano area dating from the 7th century BC to the 14th century. Two exhibition rooms display finds from archaeological excavations in Subbiano and Capolona. In July, the Notti dell’Archeologia annually offers opportunities there to explore and communicate archaeological topics in greater depth. In addition, the Museo Quelli della Karin offers educational programmes and meetings and conducts historical research.

Paths through forests and along the Arno

The Alpe di Catenaia can be explored on foot from Falciano via signposted paths. The paths lead through forests and along mountain ridges. Alongside the historic buildings, this makes a landscape the focus, where an active part of the day can be combined with cultural visits. The hamlet of Falciano in the municipality of Subbiano is also home to a distinctive mill complex that has been in operation since the 16th century. The watermills of the Mattesini families in Falciano are well preserved and remain operational with their stone millstones. The Via Romea Germanica passes through Subbiano. This historic pilgrimage route was used by pilgrims from Scandinavia and Central and Eastern Europe on their way to Rome. For visitors who wish to experience historic routes not only as sights but also as part of the landscape, it complements the town’s archaeological and ecclesiastical history themes.

Chestnuts, festivals and regional traditions

Vogognano is an important chestnut-growing area; it is also home to old chestnut drying sheds. A local tradition is the blessing of animals and bread in honour of Saint Anthony. This is followed by a traditional communal lunch. In Subbiano, the traditional Festa dell’Uva is celebrated in September, with local products available for tasting. The Cena Medievale nel Borgo is characterised as a July event featuring jesters, musicians, performers and typical dishes from Casentino. For practical orientation within the landscape, it is also recorded that Casa al Taverni and Fonte al Baregno are accessible by car. The Arezzo–Stia railway line connects Subbiano with Arezzo and the upper Casentino. When choosing your accommodation, this allows you to incorporate both cultural and historical destinations and wooded heights, river landscapes and regional traditions into your travel planning.
