Carmignano – Art, Wine Landscape and Tuscan Culture

Carmignano combines the Tuscan hills with art, history and regional produce. Forests, vineyards, olive groves and farmland shape the landscape; at the same time, cultural discoveries range from a significant painting and a medieval fortress to a Medici villa. This gives the town a variety of points of interest for a stay combining cultural activities, landscapes and regional cuisine.

Art and History in Carmignano

A special cultural landmark is Pontormo’s “Visitation.” The oil painting on wood is dated to around 1528–1530 and is located in the Propositura of Saints Michael and Francis in Carmignano. Those interested in Italian art history will encounter a clearly identified work here at its documented location. From the Antica Rocca di Carmignano, views extend across the surrounding landscape and the plain between Florence, Prato and Pistoia. The Rocca itself houses a model of the medieval fortress, a reconstructed 15th-century kitchen, historical photographs and agricultural equipment. The fortress model and reconstructed kitchen illustrate the medieval complex and everyday life in the past; historical photographs and agricultural equipment complement the historical references presented there.

Artimino and the Medici Villa

Another cultural and historical highlight is the Villa Medicea La Ferdinanda in ArtiminoArtimino. It was built between 1596 and 1600 and is also called the “Villa of a Hundred Chimneys” because of its numerous chimneys, deliberately designed in different styles. The Villa Medicea La Ferdinanda comprises 56 rooms, including areas with frescoes by Passignano and Bernardino Poccetti. Since 1983, the Museo Archeologico di Artimino has been housed in the basement of the villa.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The Palio dei Ciuchi takes place on a circuit running around the town center of Carmignano. At the Festa di San Michele, folkloric processions by the four Rioni Arcangelo, Arte, Leone and Torre are part of the established program. Arcangelo is associated with light blue, Arte with green, Leone with yellow and Torre with white.

Wine, Figs and Regional Produce

At the Museo della vite e del vino di Carmignano, you can discover the grape varieties grown in Carmignano and local produce. A special regional delicacy is the dried figs from Carmignano. They are subject to their own production specification and have also been a Slow Food Presidium since December 1, 2001.
