Vaiano between Calvana and monastic history

Hiking between the Calvana and medieval trails

On the Calvana side facing Vaiano, there are around 20 kilometres of marked hiking trails along the main routes. These include the ridge trail and paths starting from the village of Sofignano. Those looking for a longer route can take the Via della Lana e della Seta, a 130-kilometre trail connecting Bologna and Prato via existing hiking paths in six full-day stages. The Via delle Rocche also leads through a landscape steeped in history. The section relating to Vaiano leads to Villa del Mulinaccio, Badia di San Salvatore a Vaiano and Torre di Melagrana. The Via delle Rocche follows old medieval paths along the slopes and can be divided into stages. This combination of route and historic destinations makes the trail appealing to travellers who want to discover not only landscapes but also specific cultural sites while hiking. The Pista Ciclabile between Vaiano and Prato offers another active perspective. It runs along the left bank of the Bisenzio for 11.5 kilometres through green surroundings, extending from Vaiano to Gamberame. The cycling route thus complements the paths on the slopes with a route along the river.

Villa del Mulinaccio and protected landscape

Villa del Mulinaccio brings together history and gardens. The oldest part was built by Cosimo Sassetti between the late 15th and early 16th centuries on an existing building. Filippo Sassetti lived at the villa during his childhood and youth. The estate includes a park with monumental trees and an orchard containing old fruit varieties. The park lies within the protected area Area Naturale Protetta del Monteferrato. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the villa with a view of the cultural landscape without losing sight of the natural side of the area.

Badia, museum and local traditions

Badia di San Salvatore a Vaiano belonged to a monastery founded between the 9th and 10th centuries by Cassinese Benedictine monks. The Museo della Badia is located in the former monastery next to Badia di San Salvatore. The museum tour also includes the Church of San Salvatore and the cloister of the former monastery. In the former refectory, the museum displays finds documenting the monks' everyday life. The Museo della Badia di Vaiano is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 3 to 6 p.m. Groups and school classes can visit by prior reservation. The Chiesa dei Santi Giusto e Clemente also contains a polychrome wooden crucifix from the 18th century. Regional flavours are also part of Vaiano's character. In Vaiano and throughout the Prato area, a confectionery tradition passed down through generations is maintained. These include, among other things, anise-flavoured Zuccherini and Sassi della Calvana. Vaiano's traditional carnival takes place in February with a parade of allegorical floats; according to the description, five floats from the primary school classes and one from the middle school pass through the town each year. Other destinations to consider are Colle, Montemurlo, Cantagallo, Prato, Artimino, Vernio, Poggio A Caiano and Fornacelle.
