Cantagallo – Hiking Trails, Nature and Culture in Tuscany

Hiking among springs, mills and mountain forests

Cantagallo is a Tuscan destination for travelers who want to combine experiences in nature with regional history and art. The best way to get to know the area is through its hiking trails: the Via delle Fonti e dei Mulini di Cantagallo is a seven-day route on CAI trails and runs almost entirely within the municipality of Cantagallo. However, you can also explore the route in individual circular stages, each of which can be completed in one day. This creates a practical distinction when choosing your accommodation between a multi-day hiking route and individual day trips.

Two different hiking formats

The Sentiero delle Sorgenti del Bisenzio is also designed as a circular hiking trail and can be completed in one day. Luogomano is recommended as the starting and finishing point. Along the way, the trail passes the buildings of Vespaio and delle Barbe. Several rest areas with tables and benches, fences and steps are part of the trail's documented features, as is complete signage. The signs contain information about hiking trails, place names and historical topics relating to the surrounding area.

For orientation within the municipality, the cammINatura project created by the Comune di Cantagallo in 2020 provides an easy-to-use map. It shows points of interest and recommended walking routes and can be accessed via Google Maps on desktop and mobile devices without an additional app. The visitor center of the Riserva Acquerino Cantagallo is also located in the town. There you can obtain information, and the center assists with organizing hikes.

Woodland landscapes in the nature reserve

The Acquerino-Cantagallo Provincial Nature Reserve is characterized by extensive beech forests, chestnut groves, conifer plantations and mixed forests. A prominent natural feature is the centuries-old Faggione di Luogomano beech tree. Its crown covers an area of approximately 600 m². In Cantagallo, therefore, it is not only the route itself that takes center stage, but also the varied woodland landscape through which the trails pass.

Textile history, art and medieval traces

The Museo Materia expands the focus on nature and hiking to include the history of the textile sector in the Bisenzio Valley and in Prato. Ecological, historical, artistic and technological content there conveys the development of this branch of the economy. In Luicciana, a small hamlet of Cantagallo, an open-air museum with a contemporary art complex has been established.

The Rocca di Cerbaia is a fortification in the municipality of Cantagallo. Its origins probably date back to the 12th century. It was part of a defense system for guarding the road toward Lombardy. The history of the complex also includes a local legend according to which Dante Alighieri was turned away there on a cold night in 1285 while seeking refuge. As the residence of the noblewoman Cunizza da Romano, the Rocca thus combines documented historical connections with a traditional tale.
