Monsummano Terme: Culture, Landscape and Grotta Giusti

Monsummano Terme combines historic sites, trails through the landscape and unusual underground spaces. If you do not want to experience culture and nature separately in Tuscany, you will find several different points of connection here: a basilica as a historical and urban centre, the village of Monsummano Alto with its medieval church, museums and exhibitions, as well as trails through forests, olive groves and the wetlands of the Padule di Fucecchio.

Historic Sites and Museums

The Basilica of Madonna della Fontenuova was founded in 1602 at the instigation of Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici. It forms the historical and urban centre of Monsummano Terme and is therefore an important reference point if you would like to get to know the town through its history and its developed urban structure. Another historical focal point is Monsummano Alto. There, the Church of San Nicolao is the best-preserved building in the village. Its foundation dates back to the 11th century. The church therefore represents a significantly older historical layer than the Basilica of Madonna della Fontenuova and complements the view of the area's development. The Villa Renatico Martini belongs to more recent history. The villa, built in 1887, was constructed for the journalist and statesman Ferdinando Martini, who came from Monsummano. The Anello dell'Isola, also called the Anello del Padule di Monsummano Terme, is a historical and naturalistic trail through the landscape of Monsummano Terme and the wetlands of the Padule di Fucecchio. The trail therefore connects local history with the landscape, without requiring you to limit yourself to an exclusively urban cultural programme. For a walk on the hill, the Passeggiata sul colle di Monsummano starts in Via Maneto near the town hall. It follows CAI Trail 832 through forests and olive groves. The trail leads to Monsummano Alto and offers views over the plain, the Montalbano ridge and the village of Montevettolini. If you prefer to experience the landscape actively rather than only from a viewpoint, this combination of a signposted trail, forest, olive groves and panoramic views is the main attraction. The Grotta Giusti opens up a completely different dimension. It extends for more than 200 metres underground and includes underground labyrinths with stalactites and stalagmites, as well as spacious cavernous areas. These spaces recall Dante's Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. Together with the trails on the hill and through the wetlands, this creates a broad spectrum of experiences: historic architecture, regional museum content, open landscapes and a distinctive underground world.
