Montale Between History, Olive-Covered Hills and Nature Trails

Montale brings together several sides of Tuscany without requiring you to commit to just one type of travel experience. The municipality lies between the heights of the Apennines, the hills shaped by olive groves and the plain, on the border between the provinces of Pistoia and Prato. Sacred Art and Historic Places

An important cultural point of reference is the Pieve di San Giovanni Evangelista. It was already mentioned in 957 under its former name, San Giovanni Battista a Valliano. Its documented history therefore reaches far back into the Middle Ages. The Pieve also houses the Annunciation painted by Sebastiano Vini in 1552. The building is therefore interesting not only because of its age, but also because of the specific artwork that connects you there with the history of the place.

The Castello di Montale Alto adds another historical dimension, with origins dating back to the late Middle Ages. The Abbazia di San Salvatore in Agna is the oldest place of worship in the Montale area. Together with the Pieve and the castle, it forms a cultural picture spanning different periods, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single museum or attraction.

Villa Smilea is also one of the notable cultural sites. Two rooms on the villa’s piano nobile preserve particularly valuable frescoes. The term refers to the representative main floor of a historic building; in this case, it draws attention to the interiors and their painted decoration. During your stay, Montale can therefore be explored through both its sacred art and its secular historic architecture.

Paths Through the Landscape

The surroundings can be discovered not only through buildings and art. The Striglianella nature trail leads through the area around Montale, shaped by olive groves and vineyards. Its landscape experience is therefore closely connected with the character of the hills that define the area. Those wishing to complement their stay with a walk through nature will find an independent way to experience the surroundings here, rather than viewing the region exclusively through its historic buildings.

The Via delle Agne offers a different type of route. It is a circular trail between Fognano and Tobbiana and links the three tributaries of the Agna stream. The circular trail is therefore clearly different from the Striglianella nature trail: here, the focus is on connecting several watercourses within a set route. When planning your days, you can thus choose between cultural destinations and different landscape experiences.

A Regional Speciality from Prato

The culinary side of the area includes Mortadella di Prato IGP. It is distinguished by its special seasoning and the addition of Alkermes. This ingredient gives the speciality a clearly recognisable regional character. Together with the landscapes shaped by olive groves and vineyards, it adds a culinary facet to Montale that goes beyond general ideas of Tuscan cuisine.
