Abetone – Winter Sports, Cycling Routes and Pass History

Abetone combines winter sports with cycling routes, pass history, and regional cuisine. Slopes, cross-country skiing, and cycling routes are among the active pursuits available in the area.

Winter sports in different formats

The Abetone Val di Luce ski area has 50 km of slopes and 17 lifts, including chairlifts, drag lifts, cable cars, and conveyor belts. This means that the offering is not limited to a single type of lift or slope. Another option is the Pista del Maiori: it begins 200 metres from Piazza dell’Abetone and is suitable for both classical technique and skating, as well as snowshoe hikes. Those who would like to combine different winter activities will therefore find two clearly distinct options here – a ski area with several lifts and a Pista, or winter route, offering several types of use near the Piazza. The Abetone Gravity Park’s cross-country circular routes start at the base of the cable car and are between 5 and 30 km long. The range therefore extends from shorter to considerably longer circular routes. For cycling, the Abetone–Lago Nero–Abetone e-bike route is also available. It is 18 km long, takes approximately 3 hours, and has a medium difficulty level.

Town centre and the history of the pass

In the town centre of Abetone stands the Piramidi dell’Abetone monument at an altitude of 1,375 metres. The Piramidi dell’Abetone were erected to commemorate the opening of the Abetone Pass and visibly marked the historic border between Tuscany and the Duchy of Modena. The site thus combines a visible monument with the history of crossing the pass. For a cultural part of your stay, the Museo dello Sci di Abetone is another option. From Pistoia, Abetone can be reached via the SS66 and then the SS12 over a distance of 50 km.
