Church history, protected buildings and a mostly wooded hiking route give Lizzanello its distinct character. The surrounding area also has memorial sites and a historic stone bridge. As you plan your trip, you can decide whether the town’s history or outdoor activity should be the main focus.

Churches and history in Lizzanello

The Oratorio di Santa Maria Maddalena is a subsidiary church and the church around which Lizzanello developed. If you are interested in religious heritage, it offers a direct way to explore the town’s history.

Lizzanello is known for buildings dating from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. A 15th-century oratory stands next to Pietro Becarelli’s house and faces south. The subsidiary church and this oratory offer two different ways to explore the town’s sacred architectural heritage.

The Orthodox monastery at Via di Lizzanello 1 is listed as a cultural heritage property with statutory protection under Article 10, paragraph 1 of Italian Legislative Decree 42/2004. The Orthodox Theological Faculty of San Gregorio Magno is based at this address, at the monastery in San Felice, Pistoia. It offers courses, seminars and study programs for people who want to deepen their knowledge of the Orthodox faith. Thus, alongside architectural heritage, theological education and religious practice are also among the themes associated with Lizzanello.

Don Livi founded the Monastery of San Serafino di Sarov in Lizzanello. The surrounding area is also home to Ponte del Picchio, a stone bridge with two arches, built toward the end of the 18th century. It adds a structure from the area’s transport history to its religious and church-historical heritage.

Hiking route and memorial sites

A route description from 2022 gives the Lizzanello hiking route’s length as 2.6 kilometers. According to the description, the route begins on Via di Lizzanello in the Borgo di San Felice area and runs mostly through woodland; only a short section follows a paved road. The description lists hiking and easy walks as possible activities. The distance, terrain and suggested activities give you concrete points of reference when deciding what kind of exercise to include in your days.

Personal and historical memorials include the “Albero di Elisa,” dedicated to a girl by her grandparents. A wooden bench stands in front of the tree. A plaque beside the church commemorates Pietro Becarelli as one of the “Mille” and as a hero of Italian unification. Here you can encounter both a personal dedication and a reminder of a chapter in Italian history.

At Bozzo della Salamandra, stones are stacked on top of one another as mementos left by passersby. Together with the buildings and hiking route, these features offer a range of interests to guide your decision about Lizzanello as a place to stay: local church history, historical traces or time spent walking on a mostly wooded route.
