Pianosinatico

Pianosinatico combines several clearly distinct trails with traces of wartime history, nature observation spots and a viewpoint overlooking two valleys. This makes it easy to choose between short circular walks, longer connections and a thematic visit in the village during your stay. The routes are not all alike: some run without any change in elevation, while others lead over exposed sections or take the form of a longer circular route through several villages.

Marked Trails for Different Day Plans

The Percorso Giallo is approximately 1.5 km long and has an elevation gain of 150 m. It leads to bunker remnants and the reconstructed “La Buca” bunker, combining a manageable trail length with tangible historical traces. The Percorso Verde, also known as the “Via del partigiano,” is approximately 1 km long and has no change in elevation. Wooden sculptures and the “Albero della Pace” give this trail its own distinctive character. Those looking for a longer connection will find the approximately 4 km-long Percorso Azzurro “Via della 10° Mountain Division,” with an elevation gain of 220 m and exposed sections. It connects Pianosinatico with Pian degli Ontani. The Percorso Blu “Via delle Pattuglie” is approximately 3.5 km long, has an elevation gain of 150 m and connects Pianosinatico with Fontana Vaccaia and Abetone. The Percorso Arancione “Via della Germanica Squadriglia” is an approximately 16 km-long circular route through Pianosinatico, Rivoreta, Bicchiere and Le Regine.

Nature, Views and a Local Legend

Another option is the “Itinerario del Cappel d'Orlando,” described as easy and marked in red and blue; it is also the old connecting road between Pianosinatico and Pian degli Ontani. The mixed-terrain route is approximately 7 km long, has an ascent of 70 m and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes there and back. Orchids and snowdrops can be observed along the roadside of the old connecting road. After several ascents and descents, a narrow ridge trail leads to the summit of Cappel d'Orlando. There is a viewpoint there overlooking the Lima and Sestaione valleys. The trail also passes a beech tree called “Albero della Fortuna.” According to a local legend, walking through the opening in its trunk brings lifelong good luck. In this way, a single natural feature complements the longer trail sections with a traditional story, without restricting the excursion to a simple viewpoint walk.

History Right in the Village

“4 Passi a Pianosinatico sulla Linea Gotica Toscana” is a thematic trail through the village. It focuses on anecdotes and particular aspects of the war, as well as the period when the front was in Pianosinatico. Another historical layer dates back to the second half of the 18th century: at that time, one of four post stations with an inn in the Pistoia area was located here. It served as a temporary stop for couriers, private carriages and stagecoaches, for transporting people, goods and correspondence, changing horses, and allowing passengers to board and disembark.

Pianosinatico is located on the Statale 12 dell’Abetone e del Brennero, the state road to Abetone and the Brenner Pass. This location complements the local trails with a clearly designated road connection.
