The Rocca as the oldest part of the town

The Rocca di Guardistallo forms the oldest part of Guardistallo. In the Middle Ages, it was an important fief under the rule of the Counts Della Gherardesca. Its surviving traces make the town's history tangible: the medieval settlement includes an original gateway, the lines of the old walls and remains of medieval houses. The structural remains are distributed across the entrance, fortifications and residential areas; as a result, you encounter several parts of the former settlement there, not just a single relic. For a cultural stay in Guardistallo, the Rocca is therefore more than a historical name. It represents the town's development from a fortified medieval settlement. Anyone interested in the history of small Tuscan towns will find individual architectural clues here that come together to form a picture of the former settlement. Another important landmark is the Chiesa dei Santi Lorenzo e Agata. The older church in the castle was destroyed by the earthquake of 1846; the church was rebuilt in 1870. Its dual dedication combines the names of two early medieval churches and has been documented since 1224. The dome also has its own historical dimension: in 1934, it was painted with scenes depicting the martyrdom of the two saints.

Views from the town centre

The Belvedere sull'Alta Val di Cecina opens up views over wooded hills and the deep valleys of the Val di Cecina. It can be reached on foot from Guardistallo's town centre. This allows you to combine a visit to the town with an impression of the landscape without needing a second starting point. The location between the sea and the green hills shapes Guardistallo's character without reducing the town to just one type of landscape. Theatre history and peasant cuisine

The Teatro Marchionneschi is also part of Guardistallo's cultural history. It was inaugurated on 11 August 1883 with Donizetti's opera “La favorita”. The exact date and occasion give the town another, distinctly later cultural history alongside the medieval Rocca. A peasant dish takes centre stage at the Sagra. It is served with side dishes and sauces, including wild boar and mushrooms.
