Peccioli: Art, Museums and Tuscan Culture

Peccioli combines historic art, contemporary installations and lively events with a distinct Tuscan identity. If you do not want to reduce culture to individual sights during your trip, you will find different ways to experience it here: museums with Etruscan and sacred collections, works of art in public spaces, a panoramic terrace, concert evenings and regional specialities.

Museums and Historic Art

The Museo di Palazzo Pretorio preserves three collections of icons. The Incisioni e Litografie – Donazione Vito Merlini collection comprises 279 prints, including engravings, lithographs, woodcuts and screen prints. The Museo Archeologico di Peccioli displays finds from the Etruscan sanctuary of Ortaglia and the archaeological area of Santa Mustiola. The collection therefore ranges from graphic works to archaeological evidence. The Pieve di San Verano in Peccioli dates back to the 11th century and houses works by the Pisan school. The Museo d'Arte Sacra is also located in the Romanesque Pieve, in the Cappella dell'Assunta. Its collection includes a 13th-century panel attributed to Michele di Baldovino. The Torre Campanaria di Peccioli is 42 metres high and adds a distinctive landmark to the town's historic appearance.

Contemporary Art and Views

The MACCA – Museo D'Arte Contemporanea a Cielo Aperto has a different character. It is an open-air museum spread across Peccioli and its surrounding districts. The collection comprises more than 70 works, mostly large-scale installations. Here, art is therefore encountered not only indoors, but also in a form distributed throughout the town. At Palazzo Senza Tempo, you will find temporary and permanent exhibitions; a large panoramic terrace offers views across the valley. The surrounding area also reaches far back into the past: the Ortaglia archaeological site preserves the remains of a sanctuary complex dating from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. Your cultural selection can therefore span the arc from the Etruscan past through medieval sacred art to the present day.

Events, Cycle Route and Special Places

The Anfiteatro Fonte Mazzola hosts concerts, performances and summer festivals. It can be reached on foot in a few minutes from Peccioli's main square and has an adjacent car park. The 11 Lune theatre festival is also held there every July. In October, the Coppa Sabatini cycle race provides another regular date in the events calendar. For an active addition, Peccioli offers the 5.3-kilometre “Costellazione” cycle loop. The Centro Astronomico di Libbiano includes a planetarium that helps visitors understand constellations and seasonal changes. Bastoncelli, typical anise wafers from Peccioli, are considered a local culinary speciality.
