Garetto Basso is a destination for travelers who want to combine the Tuscan hills with clearly defined trails, waterfalls and a challenging cycling route. There are also culinary and cultural experiences around Chianni. This makes it possible to create a varied stay for families and mixed travel groups: one day can be devoted to hiking or cycling, and another to regional specialties or an opera performance.

Waterfalls and trails in the landscape

One striking natural destination is the Cascate del Ghiaccione. They consist of three consecutive waterfalls and can be reached via the road from Chianni toward Castellina Marittima. After the second bridge, there is an opportunity to park; from there, a small forest path leads along the river. The third waterfall is called “Il salto della Capra” and is not easy to reach. If you plan to include this section, you should take the accessibility information into account when planning your day.

For further hiking experiences, the Circuiti CA trail network near Chianni offers several trails of varying difficulty. The trails lead through gentle hills, forests and clear streams. This allows you to choose different focuses depending on your condition and the level of challenge you are looking for, without having to approach every tour in the same way. Those traveling with different interests can deliberately combine active routes with more leisurely excursions.

Cycling route and directions to Garetto Basso

The surrounding area also offers cyclists a clearly defined contrast between ascent and descent. On the cycling route, the road climbs for about 4 kilometers to a 509-meter-high pass and then descends through Località Garetto. The challenging section of the Garetto climb begins at the two hairpin bends immediately before the turnoff to Garetto Basso. This section is about 1.5 kilometers long. This information helps you classify the cycling tour as a separate activity and realistically plan the desired level of exertion for the day.

The approach is via Provincial Road 14, also known as the road to Miemo. The route passes through Località I Gulfi before reaching the turnoff to Garetto Basso. From there, it continues to the next turnoff toward Chianni. The Garetto climb can be approached from La Sterza or Miemo. This orientation is particularly helpful if you would like to combine your journey with a cycling stage or an excursion toward Chianni.

Regional cuisine and culture in Chianni

The culinary side of the area is showcased at the Sagra del Cinghiale. On two weekends in November, food stalls are open from Thursday to Sunday. Traditional game dishes are offered there, including pappardelle with wild boar ragù. On Sundays, a free shuttle bus also runs, allowing visitors to park outside the center and reach the center. Wild boar is also combined with regional products such as extra virgin olive oil. Chianni has a centuries-old tradition of olive cultivation, which is connected with Chianni extra virgin olive oil.

Another cultural highlight is the Chianni Opera Festival. The traditional opera event takes place in June in Chianni’s historic medieval town center. Garetto is also home to a lignite mine listed as a cultural heritage site. Alongside natural experiences, the itinerary therefore includes regional history, local culture and a distinctive form of industrial heritage.
