Casale Marittimo – History, Trails and Panoramic Views

Casale Marittimo combines a clearly recognizable medieval town layout with Etruscan traces, walking paths through the countryside and sweeping views over the coast. The Historic Center and Its Churches

The historic center, known as the “Castello,” follows two medieval rings of walls arranged concentrically. The buildings are mostly made of stone and give the town center its cohesive, historic appearance. Access is via a ramp. At the entrance, the clock tower dominates the view; it was built in 1854 on the site of an earlier gate. One of the notable interiors is the “sala romana” in the Canonica building. It contains a black-and-white mosaic floor, fragments of colored stucco work and a small image of Silenus. The sala romana can be visited with the parish priest’s permission. The present-day Church of Sant'Andrea was built in 1873 after a severe earthquake destroyed the medieval church in 1871. Its portal relief was created by Alberto Sparapani, while the interior frescoes by Stefano Ghezzani were painted in 1987–1988. Sant'Andrea is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. The Chapel of Madonna delle Grazie was built between 1712 and 1716 through voluntary labor provided by the local population. The Church of San Sebastiano was built in 1775 and restored in 1937 using additional materials from the Roman villa.

Trekking Trails with Different Highlights

The Yellow Trekking Trail is 10.5 km long and takes 160 minutes. It starts in the town center, follows Via della Pieve and passes the site where a Roman villa was discovered. The Green Trekking Trail is considerably shorter, at 3 km and 50 minutes. It leads from the countryside east of the town to the archaeological zone of Casalvecchio. The Orange Trekking Trail is 3.5 km long and takes 140 minutes. Its route runs through olive groves, vineyards and Mediterranean maquis to the Linaglia dam, located in the forest. On the hill of Casalvecchio there are also the remains of an Etruscan village dating from the 7th century BC, as well as the buildings of a second settlement founded in the 4th century BC. Those interested in early history will find here a different focus from that of the medieval Castello.
