Discover Lajatico: Culture, Nature and Tuscan Tradition

Lajatico combines impressive cultural sites, traces of history and a variety of routes through the Tuscan landscape. The Teatro del Silenzio is particularly striking: the natural amphitheatre is located on a hill, 1.5 kilometres from Lajatico town centre. The event held there takes place every year and features performances from the world of opera, international pop stars and performance artists.

Culture between the Piazza and medieval history

Lajatico can also be discovered through specific places and traditions in the town centre. Piazza Vittorio Veneto is home to an installation bearing the inscription “Speakers’ Corner – Angolo del parlatore” and a removable stool. It creates an unusual accent in the public space. Local culture also includes the handmade lace known as “Trina di Irlanda”, which has its own tradition in Lajatico.

The town’s history goes back a long way. Lajatico is an old settlement of Lombard origin and was once a castle belonging to the Counts Pannocchieschi and the Bishop of Volterra. The original Pieve di San Leonardo dates from 1275. The Oratorio di San Sebastiano was built in 1520 as a meeting place for prayer and the charitable works of a brotherhood.

In the town centre, the Castle of Lajatico also recalls the period before the year 1000. Little of it remains apart from the side facing the main piazza. The Palazzo Pretorio preserves visible prison rooms, its original structure and the coats of arms of Lajatico’s former lords. This makes it clear that Lajatico has several historical layers and a variety of monuments.

Hiking trails for different abilities

Those who want to explore Lajatico on foot or through active pursuits will find several clearly distinct options. The Grande Percorso Naturalistico can be traversed on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. The route is therefore aimed not only at hikers, but also allows for other ways of exploring the landscape.

A more challenging option is the “Cento passi nella natura” trail. It is aimed at experienced hikers, highlights natural and scenic attractions, and begins on the road to Orciatico at the bridge over the Foscie stream. The “della Mofeta” trail south of Lajatico offers a different kind of nature experience. This environmental, natural-history and scientific trail is accessible to everyone. The two trails therefore differ significantly in terms of the requirements described and their thematic focus.

As a historic destination in the countryside, the Rocca di Pietracassia is part of the municipality of Lajatico. The early medieval fortification also offers extensive views: from there, the view stretches across the entire Valdera and large parts of the Val di Cecina as far as the nearby city of Volterra. Cultural history and appreciation of the landscape can be directly combined here.

The area around Lajatico is also known for its typical agricultural products. Olive oil and wine are among the most important typical products of the region.
