Orciatico Between Fortress, Windmills and Hills

Orciatico reveals a particularly multifaceted side of Tuscany: Its historic village center displays the characteristics of a medieval village and is grouped around its fortress. Cultural History in the Village Center

A prominent landmark is the Church of San Michele Arcangelo. It was built in the 16th century in place of an older parish church dating from the 13th century. The castle tower also tells of the village's development: It was renovated in 1993 as part of an urban development and restoration project. During the restoration, a stone engraved with the year 652 AD was discovered and integrated into the tower's front facade.

Among the most striking historic structures are Orciatico's two windmills. They are tower windmills with two-story stone bodies and rotating wooden caps. The second windmill was built in 1761 by Tommaso Tani from Orciatico. The windmills offer a panorama over forests and hills, with a view of the Rocca di Pietracassia. The Grande Percorso Naturalistico is a 200-kilometer route for hiking, off-road and mountain biking, as well as horseback riding, which passes through or by Orciatico. The route thus represents active exploration, while the historic village center and the windmills provide a clear cultural focus.

Exceptional Nature and Views of the Starry Sky

An extraordinary natural phenomenon is the Mofeta di Borboi near Orciatico. It is a mud pool that emits carbon dioxide of geothermal origin. The carbon dioxide concentrations near it can potentially reach toxic levels; the barriers must not be crossed. The Mofeta is therefore a place where the geological peculiarity and the applicable restriction are both part of the visiting experience.

Another perspective is offered by the astronomical observatory of Orciatico. There, it is possible to observe stars down to the sixth visual magnitude. In this way, the night sky adds an independent astronomical experience to the historic buildings, hill trails and nature observation.
