Carrara: Marble, Museums and Quarry History

In Carrara, art, marble and history come together. In museums, historic sites and the marble quarries, you will encounter different chapters of the city’s story: from archaeological finds and tools to sculptures, documents and the artistic developments of the present day. Carrara therefore offers a cultural focus for a trip in which not only individual works of art, but also the material and its processing take centre stage.

Museums Dedicated to Marble and Sculpture

The Museo Civico del Marmo displays archaeological finds, graphic and photographic documents, machinery used to process marble, casts, educational models and marble samples. The collection thus combines different perspectives on marble: its history, its processing and its use in art and crafts. The mudaC – Museo delle Arti di Carrara is dedicated to sculpture and its stylistic and material development. At the same time, it documents the city’s artistic development from the 1950s to the present day. The museum is housed in the 17th-century complex of San Francesco, with its church and adjoining monastery. The site thus combines an exhibition of modern and contemporary art with a historic building complex. At CARMI – Museo Carrara e Michelangelo, another approach to the city’s history becomes visible. The museum is located in Villa Fabbricotti, a 19th-century building in Parco della Padula in Carrara. On the piano nobile, Carrara presents a tribute to the sculptor Michelangelo Buonarotti, who used the city’s marble in masterpieces recognised across different eras. In the Il Ravaccione gallery, you can also see a mural by the artist OZMO depicting Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam.

Art in Parco della Padula

Parco della Padula complements the museum experience with a permanent outdoor sculpture exhibition. The works were created on the occasion of the 2002 International Sculpture Biennale of the city of Carrara as part of the open-air section Scolpire il Marmo. The park thus combines views of sculpture under open skies with the documented exhibition context of the biennale. Parco della Padula is accessible to people with disabilities; admission is free.

Quarries and the History of Labour

The marble quarries in this area of Carrara have been exploited since Roman times. From Carrara city centre, the marble quarries can be reached by car, motorbike or bicycle. Cava Museo Fantiscritti offers a 45-minute guided tour. It covers 2,000 years of quarry history, art history and the social life of the workers employed there, as well as historic methods of processing and transporting marble. Cava Museo Danesi in Fantiscritti offers a different perspective. It is not an active quarry, but preserves the memory of the quarry workers’ lives and the historic work carried out in the quarry through a reconstructed shelter, a laid-out wire saw, life-size marble oxen and the tools used by the quarry workers.
