Roccatederighi between Rocks, History and the Maremma

Roccatederighi combines an unusual rocky landscape with a historic town centre and a lively village culture. The village lies on a spur of Monte Sassoforte and offers sweeping views over the northern Maremma. Particularly distinctive are the rhyolite rocks known as “I Massi”, between which the medieval village developed. Rocks, town centre and traces of history

In the upper part of Roccatederighi are the rhyolite outcrops known as “I Massi”. From there, the view extends as far as the sea and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. This makes the rocks a prominent landmark of the village, while the landscape cannot be separated from its historical context: Roccatederighi is nestled among the large rhyolite rocks, and its towers and rooftops follow the contours of the rocks. The old town centre is entered through a round-arched gate situated between rocks and walls. Beyond it, lanes, arcades and stairways lead through the village. In the upper section are the remains of the ancient fortress and sections of the original 14th-century walls. In the Tufolino area, there is also a staircase and several houses carved into the rock. At the edge of the historic centre, the Church of San Martino Vescovo stands immediately beside the rhyolite outcrops known as “I Massi”. Inside the church is a 15th-century crucifix attributed to the Tuscan region. The Torre dell’Orologio was built in 1911 on the rocky spur of Roccatederighi and rises above the historic centre. History between castle, mine and Art Nouveau

Among the other prominent historical features is the Roccatederighi copper mine. It was first worked in 1833 and was located directly outside the castle. Outside the built-up area stands Villa del Paradiso, an Art Nouveau building. Roccatederighi therefore reflects not only medieval town structures but also traces of later architectural and economic history. The geological history is also part of the village’s character. The Roccatederighi lava dome formed in the Late Pliocene, around 2.6 to 2.0 million years ago. Festivals with a history of their own

The events calendar is closely linked to the local identity. The Palio Storico delle Contrade takes place every year on 14 August. The festival includes a donkey race involving residents and tourists. The five contrade—Corso, Torre, Tramonto, Nobili and Ventosa—compete along the village’s main street for a Palio banner. The banner is designed by a different artist each year. Another recurring event is “Medioevo nel Borgo”. The event has been organised every year since 1993 on the first weekend of August.
