Ansana: historic settlements and paths around Mount Piglione

Ansana combines a historically legible settlement landscape with several precisely described routes associated with the Piglione theme. If you would like to combine culture, landscapes and active days in Tuscany, you will encounter both the history of a settlement area and specific route features here. Ansana is part of the historic settlement areas of Pescaglia, whose original settlement structure remains legible in the morphology of the settlements. Ansana is also one of the historic settlements situated midway up the left slope of the Pedogna. A historic path connects these settlements, including Ansana. As a result, the focus is not only on the individual village but also on the connection between several historic settlement areas. Two documented routes with different features

In the roadbook for the 45-km Piglione Trail, Ansana is listed at kilometre 15.1 and at an elevation of 290 metres. The kilometre and elevation figures refer to Ansana within this roadbook. A different route description concerns the 55-km Ultra Piglione Trail: it leads from Celle dei Puccini to Ansana via an unnumbered path. After Ansana, sections of asphalt and path alternate on the Ultra Piglione Trail before the route reaches Villa a Roggio. On the section after Ansana, the route also follows a descending staircase. If you compare the two route descriptions, you should therefore consider their different details separately: the 45-km trail places Ansana in the roadbook by kilometre and elevation, while the 55-km Ultra Trail describes the route, changing surfaces and a staircase after Ansana. For local orientation, Ansana is listed as a stop on the Autolinee Toscane E12 route. In addition, a car park at the church of Ansana is recorded in a municipal emergency-planning inventory. Puccini, mills and chestnuts as cultural themes

The cultural character is complemented by several independent themes. Following the restoration of the historic stage sets and curtain, the Teatrino di Vetriano is once again hosting performances of various kinds. The Puccini Museum in Celle dei Puccini displays family heirlooms, letters, musical instruments, a piano on which part of “Madama Butterfly” was composed, and manuscripts from the works of Giacomo Puccini. The museum is located in a former Puccini family home, which belongs to the association of historic houses Case della Memoria. Molino di Menicone illustrates a water-powered milling tradition in which grain, maize and chestnuts play a role. The Associazione Culturale Amici del Molino actively preserves Molino di Menicone and promotes engagement with a culture connected to ways of living and working that have since disappeared. The Chestnut Museum also focuses on a specific aspect of regional everyday culture: it presents the harvesting, drying, processing and culinary use of chestnuts.
