Ortignano Raggiolo – Chestnut Culture on Pratomagno

Ortignano Raggiolo combines the history of a mountain village with the chestnut culture of Casentino. Raggiolo lies at the foot of Pratomagno, whose slopes are rich in chestnut and beech forests. At the same time, the village has a feature that you should take into account when finding your way around: the streets in the village of Raggiolo are accessible only on foot. The historic village setting can therefore be explored via paths and squares within the village, not via a continuous road accessible by vehicle.

Village history in San Michele and at La Bastia

An important cultural landmark is the church of San Michele. It was established in the former palace of Count Guido Novello Guidi. Inside, it preserves a Madonna and Child from the 15th century, attributed to Donatello’s workshop. The history of the former castle is also closely connected with Raggiolo: the castle is mentioned in 1225 and came under the rule of the Guidi counts from the mid-13th century. A Corsican colony settled in Raggiolo centuries ago to repopulate the old castle, which had been destroyed in the 15th century. The surviving wall of the former castle remains as a trace of this past. It is still known locally as “la bastia”. In Raggiolo, therefore, you encounter not only individual historic names, but also several traditional references to the development of the village, its history of rule and its former fortifications.

Chestnuts as the village’s common thread

The Ecomuseo della Castagna di Ortignano Raggiolo focuses on the gathering and culinary use of chestnuts. The visitor route leads from the forest via the drying shed and the mill to the museum. This sequence presents the chestnut not merely as a natural product, but connects its origin in the forest with the stages of its processing and interpretation. The Ecomuseum also includes a laboratory where children can handle and work with the materials presented along the route. For families who do not want to experience cultural content exclusively through exhibitions, this is a clearly defined part of the museum’s offerings. A special chestnut variety called “raggiolana” is also prized in Raggiolo. The village’s event calendar is also connected with the local culture. The Festa della Castagnatura is Raggiolo’s most important festival in autumn. The Colloqui di Raggiolo take place every year in September and focus on an aspect of local culture each time. The two references show different ways in which history and chestnuts are present in the village: once as an autumn festival, and once as a recurring annual exploration of a cultural topic.

Mill, information boards and paths through Raggiolo

The ancient water mill, Mulino di Morino, is located on the Barbozzaia stream in Raggiolo. In addition, the history and stories of the village are conveyed through information boards at strategically located points along the streets. Together with the village structure, which can only be explored on foot, this creates a way of finding your bearings through individually named places, historical references and the course of the streets within the village.

Getting to Ortignano Raggiolo

The route description leads via the Arezzo exit of the A1 motorway and then along the S.S. 71 Umbro-Casentinese towards Casentino, to Bibbiena and subsequently to Ortignano-Raggiolo.
