Chitignano presents its history particularly vividly where it is connected to specific places and trails. The Ecomuseo del contrabbando e della polvere da sparo documents the production and trade of gunpowder, which shaped Chitignano in the 19th century. This means that it is not just a museum that takes centre stage, but a subject that also continues in the area outside the town. For a visit with a cultural focus, the Ecomuseo is an obvious starting point. In July and August, it is open on public holidays and the days preceding them from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Historic sites in the townscape

The Castello dei Conti Ubertini dates back to the 10th century and is located on the road from Rassina to Chiusi della Verna. Nearby is the ancient Podesteria, which was established at the beginning of the 15th century. It preserves a valuable 17th-century fresco of the Annunciation. Around the Castello, you will therefore encounter different historical layers: the medieval complex, the later administrative history and a religious work of art. The Chiesa dei Santi Vincenzo e Pietro is also one of the notable historic destinations. It was built at the beginning of the 17th century and remodelled several times. Those interested in architectural history and religious art will therefore find several distinct points of interest in Chitignano, without the town having to be reduced to a single monument. The Fiera del Tordo is a tradition in its own right. It has been held in Chitignano on a Sunday in October since the early 19th century. The town then features food and craft stalls, as well as cultural events and convivial gatherings. The event combines history with an expressly community-oriented character.

Trails to the traces of gunpowder history

The historical themes can be combined with various trails. The Polveriera dell'Inferno trail leads through the area outside the town to one of the largest Pilli. The Sentiero del Pillo delle Motte begins at the Ecomuseo del contrabbando e della polvere da sparo. The Sentiero dei Contrabbandieri runs along old smuggling routes between Casentino and Val Tiberina. This gives you your own way of accessing the region's history: not only are the production and trade of gunpowder documented, but the historical connections across the landscape are also made visible as a trail. Another option is a cycling route from Bibbiena railway station to the Santuario de La Verna and then on to Chitignano. It is described as a specific sequence of stages and complements the shorter trails around the Ecomuseo with a longer connection between several places.

Springs and the Via Romea Germanica

The springs of Chitignano were valued in the Middle Ages by pilgrims travelling towards Rome along the Via Romea Germanica. This historical connection gives the springs a significance that extends beyond their location in the landscape. The Sorgente Buca del Tesoro is one of three springs near Chitignano. The municipality has created an equipped green area at this spring. There are two separate springs there with two different types of water.
