Castel San Niccolò – Castles, Stone and Pratomagno

If you are looking for a place in Tuscany that combines medieval history, traditional craftsmanship and mountain scenery, Castel San Niccolò reveals an unusually varied character. The surviving remains of the Castello di Castel San Niccolò stand at the highest point of the historic centre and dominate the surrounding valley. In the Castello dei Conti Guidi, the Cappella del Crocifisso preserves a Crucifixion fresco from the Florentine school dating from the 14th century. The castle was the residence of the Guidi family until 1349.

Churches and Historical Testimonies

Several religious buildings further deepen this historical character. The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Donato was built in the 12th century, has a Romanesque character and is connected with the history of the Conti Guidi. The Pieve di San Martino a Vado preserves its original façade. It was built in the 11th century by the Conti Guidi at an ancient crossing over the Solano River. A stone path named I SEGNI DELLA STORIA begins at the monumental cemetery of Strada in Casentino and continues to the parish church. In the Chiesa di Santa Maria a Spalanni, Francesco Mati's Madonna del Rosario e Santi from 1605 is located on the high altar; the church also houses Francesco Mati's Maddalena Penitente. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo dates from the 13th century and is regarded as an example of the region's Romanesque architecture. It preserves 14th-century frescoes and a stone high altar. The entrance is also accessible to people with disabilities. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista probably dates from the 15th or 16th century and combines Romanesque-Gothic architecture with a restored 16th-century fresco of the Madonna della Consolazione.

Stone as Craft and Visitor Experience

Stone shapes more than just individual buildings. The Logge del Grano in Piazza Matteotti were built from local stone for market use. In the Museo della Pietra Lavorata in the former Salesian college in Strada in Casentino, the exhibition is divided into several thematic areas: the local landscape and traditional everyday stonework, the stone Middle Ages, the stonecutters of Strada in Casentino and contemporary stone art. The stonecutters of Strada represent a local craft tradition; those still active preserve knowledge of traditional tools and techniques. The guide identifies three thematic stone paths in Strada in Casentino that lead to important historical and cultural features of the surrounding area related to stone. For trips with children, stonecutting workshops are offered at the Museo della Pietra Lavorata in summer. The Ecomuseo del Casentino also includes the Museo della civiltà castellana in Castel San Niccolò.

Cetica, Forest Culture and Pratomagno

In the village of Cetica, the Ecomuseo del Carbonaio preserves the memory of an occupation closely linked to the forests and their resources. It includes two reconstructed wooden huts and a charcoal kiln, which serve educational and demonstration purposes. One of the regular events at the Ecomuseo del Carbonaio is the potato festival, also known as Festa a Cetica. The municipality lists the Patata Rossa di Cetica as one of the typical products of Castel San Niccolò. At Molino Grifoni, the products offered for sale can be tasted. From Bagni di Cetica, you can reach the extensive summit meadows of Pratomagno, which are a destination for hikes. This allows you to complement your stay with an experience of the landscape without abandoning the town's cultural focus. Another recurring event is the procession at the Oratorio della Visitazione della Madonna: it takes place every year on 2 July in honour of the Madonna. The Mostra della Pietra Lavorata is held every two years at the beginning of September; stonecutters and sculptors from all over Italy take part.

Getting There and More Town Profiles

From the Valdarno, Castel San Niccolò can be reached either via a partly rough road over Pratomagno or via a paved road through Vallombrosa, Secchieta and Montemignaio.
