Caiano: Church, Borgo and Mountain Views
Accommodation in Caiano
Caiano can be explored through two specific aspects: its local history and the approach, described for its landscape. The Church of San Silvestro stands at the entrance to the village; on the way to the Borgo, views open out towards Falterona, Pratomagno and Monte La Verna.
San Silvestro and the History of the Borgo
You’ll come across the Church of San Silvestro as soon as you reach the entrance to Caiano. Together with the adjoining rectory, it dates back to the 13th century. This makes it a specific historical landmark on arrival. You don’t need to connect several different places to find it: the church and rectory belong together and are directly associated with the village.
The Borgo di Caiano probably has Etruscan origins. This probable early origin and the 13th-century church represent different historical periods. If you’re interested in the village’s history, you can keep both in mind without combining them into a single account of its origins. This preserves the Borgo’s presumed origins as such, while San Silvestro provides a clearly dated reference point.
The Approach as Part of the Landscape
From Strada in Casentino, Caiano can be reached by following the signs for “Montemignaio.” An alternative starting point is Passo della Consuma: from there, a left turn towards Caiano leads to Strada in Casentino and its hamlets. The two descriptions start from different places and can help you plan your approach based on your starting point.
The approach to Caiano follows the ridges of the Poggi di Caiano. Along the route, described for its scenery, views open out to the left towards Falterona and to the right towards Pratomagno. Before you arrive, Monte La Verna can be seen on the horizon, with its distinctive shape. These viewpoints give the approach its own distinctive landscape. If you choose Caiano for its surroundings, this impression is already part of the journey to the village, not just your stay there.
Events and Sunday Planning
Past event dates also offer insight into different local themes. On 18 August 2013, the first eight-kilometre Ecotrail “le tre fontane” took place in Caiano. Food stalls and evening entertainment were planned for the 2014 Festa Saggia/Sagra della Patata in Caiano. The two examples have different emphases: a sporting race on the one hand, and a festival with food and an evening programme on the other. If you’re planning to visit specifically for a race or festival today, check the latest dates.
For Sunday planning, a Mass in Caiano–Pagliericcio is also listed at 10:00 a.m. If this time is important to your plans, check the parish schedule again before setting out.
