Ponte A Tressa: Church Art and Pilgrimage Routes
Accommodation in Ponte A Tressa
Explore Ponte A Tressa through its church art and the history of the Via Francigena. These offer two distinct ways to plan your trip: you can learn about sacred art and medieval traces, or consider the routes as part of a day’s walk. If you want to combine culture and outdoor activities in Tuscany, these themes give your stay a specific focus.
Church Art and History
The Church of San Michele Arcangelo contains important works of art by Francesco Vanni, Rustici, Petrazzi, Annibale Mazzuoli, Rutilio, Volpi, and Beccafumi. These names offer culture enthusiasts a specific point of interest: alongside the history of pilgrimage, it is worth looking at the church’s artistic furnishings.
San Michele Arcangelo—referred to as S. Angelo al Ponte in a papal bull dated April 20, 1189—was rebuilt at the expense of the city of Siena in 1422. The church stood on the Roman post road at the confluence of the Tressa and the Arbia. Its history thus brings together a precise date, a connection to the city of Siena, and an important crossroads.
Another medieval thread leads to the Spedale of Tressa, founded by Ugolino Quintavalle in 1219. It stood beside a small church originally dedicated to Santa Maria, also known as S. Maria al Ponte. In the 13th century, the Hospital of Tressa was one of eight hospitals recorded between Ponte a Tressa and Ponte d’Arbia. These details bring the historical role of pilgrimage routes and hospitals in the area to life without equating their function at the time with that of modern accommodation.
The history goes back even further: Etruscan finds have been discovered at Tressa. Sant’Angelo a Tressa is also connected with the Via Francigena; the hamlet developed at the foot of a small castle belonging to the noble Salvani family. The history of the area thus brings together early archaeological traces and medieval routes and settlements.
Getting Around on Foot and by Bike
A stage of the Via Francigena can be split at Ponte a Tressa. The route described follows Sentiero delle Crete No. 502 to the junction with Sentiero 500, which comes from nearby Isola d’Arbia, and then continues toward Ponte a Tressa. For planning purposes, it is therefore not only the route itself that is of interest, but also the option of splitting the stage here. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.
Another route description leads from Ponte a Tressa toward Grancia di Cuna along a macadam track through flat or gently undulating terrain at the foot of gentle hills. The Il Granaio di Siena cycling loop is a different route: it passes close to Ponte a Tressa and then follows a gravel track to Grancia di Cuna. Walkers can follow the hiking trails described and split the stage as indicated; for cycling enthusiasts, the cycling loop is the relevant option.
An Annual Event
The Mostra Nazionale Canina (CAC) is organized annually by the Gruppo Cinofilo Senese and has been held at the Centro Sportivo di Ponte a Tressa since 2002. If you want to include the event in your travel plans, check the specific dates for the year in question.
