Monteguidi – Art, History and Landscape in Tuscany

Monteguidi combines a clearly recognizable historic townscape with art, literature, and cycling routes through the Tuscan landscape. Along the main street, two medieval towers can still be seen; one of them is attached to the parish church. The town is directly accessible from street level and without architectural barriers. Thus, the first tour focuses not only on individual sights but also on the town's organically developed structure.

Churches and Art in the Historic Townscape

The parish church of Chiesa dei Santi Andrea e Lorenzo is an important element of Monteguidi, although today it appears in a form that has been substantially altered from its original design. The two churches were later merged into a single building with the dual dedication to Saints Andrea and Lorenzo. The parish church houses La Madonna del Rosario, an important painting by Alessandro Casolani, dated to the early 1590s. Another religious building in Monteguidi, near the south gate, preserves the Visitazione by the Sienese painter Marco Bigio from the 16th century. The work comes from the altar of the Compagnia della Visitazione. The Chiesa della Visitazione also contains a painting attributed to Sodoma. Monteguidi therefore brings together several different art-historical references closely connected with the town's religious heritage, without equating the present form of the churches with their original state.

Literature, Painters and Local History

Monteguidi also has a literary connection to Carlo Cassola's novel La ragazza di Bube. The character Mara comes from Monteguidi; the novel was followed by a film adaptation starring Claudia Cardinale in 1963. Another biographical connection leads to the painter Augusto Bastianini, who was born in Monteguidi in 1875. His family owned a palazzo on Via Cavour, which was later donated to the municipality. The connection to the Palio di Casole is also part of the historical context: Monteguidi was among the agricultural estates represented at this event. Historically, the Palio di Casole festivities ended each year with a horse race in honor of Saint Isidore.

Monteguidi on Two Cycling Routes

For an active exploration, Monteguidi can be viewed from different directions. The La Via del Mare cycling tour reaches the town after passing through Casole d'Elsa. The approach to Monteguidi along this route offers panoramic views. La via dei Vescovi provides another perspective: its stage runs from Radicondoli to Casole d'Elsa and reaches Monteguidi along the way. From here, the route follows the ancient road from Fontegaia through agricultural landscapes and grazing areas. Thus, when choosing a destination, the focus is not only on art and history but also on the contrast between the compact historic center and the landscapes revealed along the cycling routes outside the town.
