Monteaperti

Monteaperti combines a clearly recognisable historic landscape with special sites connected by monuments, tradition and hiking trails. This creates a Tuscan experience that is not limited to a single viewpoint: the history of the Battle of Montaperti, the Acqua Borra thermal spring and a signposted hiking route offer different ways to experience this place.

Battle History at the Cippo di Monteaperti

The Cippo della Battaglia di Monteaperti is a pyramid-shaped monument commemorating the Battle of Monteaperti. It has stood since the Romantic era on the summit of a hill adorned with centuries-old cypress trees. The monument is located on the site of an old 11th-century castle that belonged to the Berardenghi family. The site's historical connection is therefore directly linked to its landscape.

The Battle of Montaperti took place on 4 September 1260. It was fought between Siena and Florence on the plain of the Arbia and Malena streams and continues to shape Monteaperti's historical significance. A living tradition is the Fiaccolata al Cippo di Monteaperti: every year, on the night of 4 September, the Monteaperti Passato e Presente committee organises this torchlight procession at the Cippo. Acqua Borra and the Landscape of the Crete Senesi

A different experience awaits you at Acqua Borra. The small thermal spring is located in Santa Maria a Dofana near Monteaperti and is traditionally considered miraculous. It lies beside a farmhouse built against an unusual travertine wall in the landscape of the Crete Senesi. The site thus combines a geological feature with a local tradition, without requiring both aspects to be explained in the same way.

Acqua Borra has been visited since the time of ancient civilisations. Clay objects were found there that had been thrown into the water as offerings to the nymphs protecting the site. These finds give the spring an additional cultural and historical dimension and make it a distinct subject alongside the battle history of Monteaperti.

Hiking Through the Battle Sites

Anyone wishing to explore Monteaperti on foot can take the hiking route to the Battle of Monteaperti, a trail of approximately 10 km. It uses paths 335, 334 and 370 and leads through the battle sites. Monteaperti is one of the listed starting points for this route; at the same time, the route passes within a few hundred metres of Monteaperti. The trail therefore combines historical orientation with a concrete hike through the landscape, without reducing the history to the monument alone.
