Sant’Ansano in Dofana: History in Two Buildings

In Casetta, in the Dofana district, you will find the Chiesa di Sant’Ansano. The church kept the body of Sant’Ansano until 1108; it was then transferred to Siena Cathedral. According to tradition, Sant’Ansano was killed as a martyr in Dofana at the beginning of the 4th century. The oldest mention of the “ecclesia sancti Ansani” dates from 650. The Cappella di Sant’Ansano a Dofana is also part of the history of the area. It is located a few hundred meters from the church and has an octagonal floor plan. The building’s history includes a significant turning point: in 1504, the chapel was almost in ruins before the Bishop of Arezzo authorized its reconstruction in 1507–1508.
