Asciano: Art, History and Paths through the Crete Senesi

Asciano combines a strong cultural character with the landscapes of the Crete Senesi. Art and history in the historic center

The historic center of Asciano still has a typically medieval layout and can be explored on foot. A 15th-century fountain stands in Piazza del Grano. The Palazzo del Podestà preserves old coats of arms, while a large fragment of a Roman mosaic floor dating from the 4th century AD has been preserved in the historic center. The churches also reflect the town’s art-historical diversity. The Church of San Francesco houses a large altarpiece from the Della Robbia workshop depicting the Madonna and Child with angels. The Basilica di Sant’Agata contains fourteen ceramic Stations of the Cross, made and painted in 1790 by the ceramicist and painter Francesco Francini, who came from Asciano. The basilica also contains a medallion depicting the Descent from the Cross, a work by Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, known as Sodoma. The older history includes two important Etruscan necropolises discovered in the Asciano area. Another historic structure is the Ponte del Garbo: it crosses the Ombrone River and has been documented since the 13th century. This route is suitable for hiking and gravel biking. In addition, a section of the Via Lauretana runs through Asciano. On gravel roads, it passes through the landscapes of the Crete Senesi and by historic villages; hiking and cycling tours are possible there. When choosing a route, the differences in how they run are particularly relevant: The circular route connects the railway station and the historic center, while the linear route leads to the wooded foothills of Montalceto.
