Momigno – History, Landscape and Hiking

Momigno combines a distinctive historic townscape with important places of remembrance, chestnut landscapes and a documented hiking route. A place with medieval traces

Momigno was mentioned in 1064 as a small rural community. In the 13th century, the place became a rural municipality. Later, a walled castle settlement was established. No surviving traces of this fortification are known today; however, the distinctive townscape has remained visible. As a result, the historical focus lies less on individual fully preserved walls than on the town's developed structure. The Church of San Donato preserves parts of its medieval surrounding walls. Several sites connected with remembrance and local history are also concentrated around the church. The Monumento ai Caduti di Momigno is dedicated to the fallen of Momigno from the First World War. It is located on Via Fagno in the Parco della Rimembranza next to the Church of San Donato. In the garden beside the church there is also a monument to Anchise, Gerino and Ottavio Baldi.

Park, church and landscape

The Parco della Rimembranza di Momigno is situated on a terrace on the left-hand side of the parish church of San Donato, at the highest point of the historic settlement. It is considered one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in the Province of Pistoia. Its location directly connects the place of remembrance with the historic center and makes it an independent destination within a visit to the town. For landscape-oriented excursions, the area along the Margine di Momigno–Panicagliora road and the adjoining strip of land is also relevant. According to the official classification, it is of considerable public importance. In the Marliana area, dense chestnut forests also shape large parts of the landscape; the hills often open out into gentle slopes with vineyards and olive groves. Forest, cultivated landscape and agriculturally shaped slopes thus exist side by side, without Momigno having to be reduced to just one type of landscape.

Hiking and regional specialties

The Anello 2 – Sentiero della pietra circular trail is 20.6 kilometers long and has an elevation gain of 793 meters. These figures characterize it as a significantly more extensive hiking format than a simple visit to the town. Anyone who wants to take a specific active undertaking into account alongside culture when choosing a destination can plan this circular trail as an independent focus. Regional cuisine also demonstrates a close connection between product and craftsmanship. Necci are flatbreads made from chestnut flour. A craftsperson makes the stone testi used to prepare them by hand. In July, the Medioevalia street arts festival also takes place in Momigno. Craftspeople, jesters, fire-eaters and theater actors perform at various locations throughout the town. Thus, the quieter historical and landscape impressions are temporarily complemented by craft, culinary and performing traditions.
