Archaeology between Ponte a Elsa and La Scala

The Antiquarium of the archaeological area of San Genesio between Ponte a Elsa and La Scala preserves archaeological material and scientific data from multidisciplinary research and excavations by the University of Pisa, which began in 2001. The collection thus refers to a history of research that documents not only individual finds but also the development of the area.

The Antiquarium’s collection also includes material from the former archaeological museum of San Miniato. This includes objects from the Etruscan necropolis of Fonte Vivo, dating from the 4th to the 1st century BC. Traces of human presence have also been found in Ponte a Elsa (Poggione). Between La Scala and Ponte a Elsa, traces of a Roman land division, known as centuriation, have been discovered.

Historic Routes and Places of Remembrance

The settlement of San Genesio was located on the ancient road between Pisa and Florence, the Via Quinzia, and later along the route of the Via Francigena. This historical context places the archaeological area within a broader framework without equating the different periods. Local sacred culture is also part of the character of the place: the Ponte a Elsa (Pino) parish is dedicated to Saints Philip and James and designated as a priory.

In the Giardino di via Medaglie d’Oro alla Resistenza, a dedicated memorial commemorates Dino Selmi, a resident of Ponte a Elsa. He was deported to Mauthausen on 8 March 1944 and died there on 21 April 1945. In addition, four memorial stones and four plaques commemorate residents from the Ponte a Elsa area who were torn from their families. These sites complement the archaeological themes with a more recent and tangible history of remembrance.

Cycling along the Elsa and the Arno

The Ciclopista dell’Arno passes through the built-up area of Ponte a Elsa. Within the municipality of San Miniato, it runs from Ponte a Elsa to San Romano along the left bank of the Elsa River and continues to a service road at the foot of the embankment. The route is therefore not merely a single section within the town: it makes it possible to cycle between the settlements and reach the Arno’s floodplains for leisure and sporting activities.

New sections of cycle paths have also been completed in Ponte a Elsa as part of the area’s development. Those planning a stay with different interests for each day can therefore combine historical themes with an active route here, without reducing the place to a single reason for visiting.

Palio di San Lazzaro

A particularly distinctive tradition is the Palio di San Lazzaro. It has taken place in Ponte a Elsa since 1982, two Sundays before Easter. The festival includes a historical procession through the streets of the town. The two districts of Poggio and Piano also compete against each other in tug-of-war, the brick race and the wheel race. The Palio thus brings together local history, competition and communal festival culture at a clearly defined time of year.
