Montecastello between castle history and trails

Montecastello is a historic village situated on a hill between the Chiecina stream and the Era River. Its history is closely linked to control of the plain below: Montecastello was an important castle. Those looking for a place with a clearly perceptible historic character for a stay in Tuscany will therefore encounter not only a rural setting here, but also a rich heritage of fortress and village history.

Churches, villa, and festival traditions

An important landmark is the Chiesa di Santa Lucia Vergine e Martire. It is located in the Montecastello district and was built on the structures of a previously existing fortress. The combination of a religious building and an older fortification makes the church a particularly vivid part of the local history. The historic complex also includes Villa Torrigiani Malaspina. It formed part of the defensive system of the medieval Borgo Montecastello. The villa also contains a private chapel with frescoes created using the trompe-l’œil technique. This type of illusionistic painting creates a sense of spatial depth through the depiction of forms. The chapel thus complements the military-history perspective with an art-historical detail. Since 1993, the villa has been the venue for the international Sete Sóis Sete Luas festival. Alongside the buildings, this means that a festival tradition extending into the present day is also part of Montecastello’s character. The Cena sotto le Stelle di Montecastello was also announced for August 10 as its seventh edition. The event was described as consistently very well attended and atmospheric.

Trails through villages and olive groves

The documented routes differ considerably in their course. Trail No. 07 “Montecastello – I Logacci – Le Colombaie/La Valle Treggiaia – Mercatale – Lo Scoiattolo – Salcione” connects Montecastello with several historic villages. It therefore represents a route where not only the starting point but also other settlements form part of the described trail. Trail No. 03 “Osteriaccia – S. Andrea Montecastello – Castellare” passes through olive groves and leads to a panoramic view of the Rio di Lama valley and the walls of Montecastello. This route therefore combines two different impressions: a landscape shaped by olive trees and a view of the fortified village. Trail No. 04b “Località la Casina – Valle Rio Filetto – Borgo di Montecastello” is a connecting route between Trail No. 03 and Trail No. 04. This distinction is helpful when planning, because the trails do not describe the same experience.

Regional specialties along the way

La Mangialonga also passes through Montecastello. The event comprises eight stages from Treggiaia to La Rotta; in Montecastello, visitors can sample regional culinary specialties. This adds a culinary occasion to the historic buildings and trails, incorporating the village into a longer route through the surrounding area.
