Discover Pomonte: Hiking, Coast and Culture

Pomonte combines distinctive hiking trails, a unique coastline and small, independent cultural sites. Here, you can choose between longer GTE stages, a circular trail through the Valle di Pomonte, experiences by the water and excursions to historic sites.

Hiking between Cavo, Poggio and Pomonte

The southern branch of the GTE leads from Cavo to Pomonte after 47 kilometres and a stated walking time of 19 hours and 30 minutes. A considerably shorter stage is indicated for the route from Poggio to Pomonte: it is 9.26 kilometres long and takes an average of around 4 hours and 40 minutes. The GTE stage from Poggio to Pomonte follows the ridge that separates the Valle di Pomonte from Vallebuia. The Percorso della Valle di Pomonte circular trail runs through the Valle di Pomonte, follows Trail No. 109 after a short section of the GTE Sud and leads to the watershed with Vallebuia. On the southern GTE stage between Poggio and Pomonte, two Caprili can also be seen in the Località Le Mure.

Beach, wreck and paths into the national park

The first beach reached from the town of Pomonte consists of gravel and stones rounded smooth by the sea, and has exceptionally clear water. A distinctive point off the coast is the Scoglio dell’Ogliera rock: it lies 200 metres from the beach and is a popular destination for divers and snorkellers because of the Elviscot wreck on the seabed there. The Elviscot wreck lies at a depth of 3 to 12 metres and is clearly visible. From dell’Ogliera beach, it can be reached by diving, swimming, canoe or pedal boat. If you would like to explore protected landscapes as well as the coast, you can set off from Pomonte on foot or by bicycle into the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.

Cultural sites in Pomonte and along the trails

The Percorso di San Bartolomeo leads to a plateau near Monte di San Bartolomeo. The ruins of a Romanesque church of the same name are located there. In the town itself, portraits of Napoleon’s wives can be seen across an entire square. The large Sedile is located in the Piazzetta del Calello in Pomonte. Together with the historic traces along the hiking trails, this creates a cultural accent that goes beyond purely natural and coastal experiences.

Getting to the western GTE starting points

To reach the western starting points of the GTE, take a ferry to Portoferraio and from there a scheduled bus operated by Autolinee Toscane to Pomonte; line 116 is indicated for this route. This connection links the journey to the town directly with the starting point described for further GTE experiences.
