La Guardia – Coastal Trails, Patresi and Island Culture

La Guardia combines a distinctive coastal landscape with trails, traces of history and local traditions. Patresi lies on a promontory sloping down into the sea; at the same time, La Guardia’s settlement core remained virtually unchanged for centuries, until tourism began in the late 1950s. This creates a destination where active days, experiences in nature and a close look at the island’s history can be combined.

Coastal trails between La Guardia and Patresi

A central hiking experience is Sentiero No. 150. It begins in La Guardia near Patresi and leads to Zanca, directly along the cliffs above the sea. The coastal trail near La Guardia is part of the Via dell’Essenza via this Sentiero. This route continues to Patresi, runs near the Faro di Punta Polveraia and carries on to the sea. The nearby lighthouse stands on the rocks of the cliff of the same name, 52 metres above sea level. The Via dell’Essenza passes through different traces of the landscape: it runs over abandoned dry-stone walls, old cart tracks and mule paths as well as newer sections of road. Those looking for a shorter route can reach the Sentiero per Punta Polveraia via the paved road leading from Patresi to the sea. In the area around Patresi, trekking and cycling are also possible on the trails of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.

Sea, bays and views

The route between Patresi and Monte Capanne offers views from Capraia to Corsica. For a different coastal perspective, the nearby Spiaggia di Punta Polveraia lies in a small bay enclosed by steep cliffs. White pebbles characterise the beach, giving it a distinctly different character from a wide sandy beach. Water sports are also among the options in the area around Patresi: canoeing, kayaking and snorkelling are mentioned there. The range therefore extends from trails above the coast to activities on the water. On the “Le Vie dei Caprili” route, you can reach the second and third Caprile by taking the GTE towards Patresi. Patresi is also one of the endpoints of the Grande Traversata Elbana, a trail connecting the eastern and western ends of Elba.

History and local flavour

The cultural surroundings include the nearby Santa Lucia Chapel, dating from 1760. The onions of Patresi have a particular regional connection: they are among the vegetable varieties preserved from extinction on Elba and are regarded as an example of the protection of agricultural biodiversity. A regular date in the local annual calendar is the dinner organised every year on 11 August at the Patresi landing stage by the Amici di Patresi e Colle d’Orano association. This occasion represents the connection between the local community, regional cuisine and the coastal setting.
