Nibbiaia: History, Trails and Views over the Tuscan Archipelago

Nibbiaia combines a clearly recognisable rural history with trails through woodland and agricultural landscapes, cultural traces in the village and sweeping views over the Tuscan Archipelago. Nibbiaia emerged as a rural settlement in the second half of the 18th century. At the same time, its development is connected with the ancient ridge road of Vajolo. This led from Castelnuovo towards the sea near Quercianella. The historical route makes it clear why roads and crossings play an important role in the village’s history, without reducing Nibbiaia to a single historical theme. A particularly prominent point of reference is the Chiesa di San Giuseppe. It is located on the historic road from Nibbiaia to Monte Nero, now called Via Saffi. On 20 November 1864, the church was dedicated to Madonna del Buon Consiglio and Saint Joseph. Landscape, Trails and Views

Elsewhere, the Sentiero 00 follows a paved section of an old road and leads to the hilltop fortress of Monte Carvoli. The route thus links various historical and landscape features: old road surfaces, cultivated areas, woodland and a fortress at a higher elevation. The nearby Parco dei Poggetti stretches from the eastern slope of the hill on which Nibbiaia lies to the S.S. 206. The park is crossed in its entirety by the Sentiero 00 and the Ippovia del Mediterraneo. Art, Church and a Local Event

In addition to its trails, Nibbiaia also has a modern artistic trace. The Wonderwall project created the mural “La Strada” by Oblo Creature here. Together with the Chiesa di San Giuseppe, it forms a village setting in which a contemporary work and a historically documented religious building offer different ways of engaging with the local culture.
