Buildings from Different Periods

The named buildings include Castello Balbo, also known as Forte di Punta Ala, and Torre Hidalgo, which is also called Torre del Barbiere. Castello Balbo dates from the second half of the 16th century and was built on the orders of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany to defend against repeated incursions by the Turks. Torre Hidalgo was built in 1577 as a coastal observation tower. A more recent architectural layer is represented by Chiesa della Signora della Consolata, which was built in 1961 in a modern style.
