Porto Ercole: Fortresses, Harbor and Trails

Porto Ercole combines a maritime atmosphere with an unusually rich history of fortifications. Between the old seafaring village, harbor and Spanish fortifications, you will discover a place where culture, coastal views, and hiking and cycling routes stand closely side by side.

Fortresses with a history of their own

The Rocca of Porto Ercole was built in the 15th century based on a design by Vecchietta and includes several buildings dating from the 13th century. A wall descending from the Rocca toward the sea connects the complex to the Santa Barbara Bastion through an underground passage. This makes the Rocca one of Porto Ercole’s notable historic sites not only because of its age, but also because of its distinctive architectural connection. Forte Filippo is a privately owned fortification built in 1558 based on a design by Giovanni Camerini. Its elongated rectangular shape, prominent corner bastions and deep moat define its appearance. Another important complex is Forte Stella. It was built by the Spanish around the second half of the 16th century and is located near Porto Ercole in the municipality of Monte Argentario. From Forte Stella, the view extends along the coast from southern Argentario to the promontory of Capo Linaro near Civitavecchia.

Old Town and Harbor

The Chiesa di Sant'Erasmo stands at the highest point of Porto Ercole’s old seafaring village. Access to the old town leads through the Porta Pisana with its clock tower. From the Governor’s Palace on Piazza Santa Barbara, you can enjoy a wide view over the harbor of Porto Ercole. Down by the water, the marina of Porto Ercole has a picturesque waterfront promenade lined with fishermen’s houses. This allows you to combine historic impressions with a maritime townscape without reducing Porto Ercole’s different sides to a single experience.

Trails on Foot and by Bicycle

The Anello dei 4 forti circular trail leads from Porto Ercole to the Spanish fortresses and passes through Cala Galera, the Rocca and Le Viste. If you would like to connect several historic sites, this route follows a clear thematic line. The Percorso del Caravaggio is a hiking trail dedicated to Caravaggio’s final days in Porto Ercole. Porto Ercole is associated with Caravaggio’s death in 1610. The surrounding area can also be explored by bicycle on its own route: the Giro del Monte e le Rocche Spagnole dell’Argentario reaches Cala Galera and the first houses of Porto Ercole. From the beach, you can enjoy a view of the Tombolo della Feniglia and Forte Filippo. This gives you a choice of routes shaped by cultural history as well as routes focused on the coast and fortifications. The Orto Botanico Corsini forms part of the wider natural and botanical diversity. It covers more than 7 hectares and contains more than 1,300 plants from 150 different species.
