Montepescali: Churches, Ceramics and Views as Far as the Sea

Montepescali brings together sacred art, defensive architecture, ceramics and an elevated position above the landscape within a small area. Churches and Art from Several Centuries

The Chiesa di San Niccolò was probably first built in the 11th century; its existence is documented by 1276 at the latest. The church also contains an altarpiece attributed to Matteo di Giovanni, a 15th-century painter of the Sienese school. A visit therefore takes you from the building's early history to a work of art associated with Siena's painting tradition. Another important stop is the Chiesa dei Santi Stefano e Lorenzo. It was built during the 13th century and, despite numerous restorations and additions, retains its original Romanesque layout. This includes a single-nave Latin cross plan and a raised transept. The bell tower was created from an existing tower along the city wall. During a tour, you therefore encounter not only ecclesiastical spaces here, but also the connection between sacred architecture and defensive structures. The Pieve di San Niccolò in Montepescali contains a 14th-century fresco cycle from the school of Bartolo di Fredi. Those interested in medieval painting and regional art history can therefore view the different churches according to their respective distinctive features, rather than seeing just one building.

Ring of Walls, Baluardo and Ceramics

The three-pronged Baluardo is located at the southern end of the ring of walls. This characteristic defensive structure was added in the 16th century. During renovation work in the last century, the Baluardo was transformed into an impressive panoramic terrace. Its present-day significance therefore combines the town's military history with a viewpoint. The Montis Pescalis Ceramiche workshop also offers a distinctive cultural highlight. Ceramic wind and percussion instruments are made there. Bucchero, a uniformly black technique characteristic of Etruscan ceramics, is used for the musical instruments produced by Montis Pescalis Ceramiche. It is also possible to take part in ceramics courses. This makes the workshop a destination where you can not only view finished objects, but also engage practically with the material.

Landscape and Walking Tour

Montepescali lies at an altitude of 222 metres on hills that originally bordered the shores of the ancient Lago Prile. Its elevated position offers views across the plain as far as the sea. Anyone who walks a little along the outside of the walls can take in the surrounding landscape. The view is therefore not dependent on a single point, but can be combined with a walk around the defensive ring. In the town, characteristic lanes lead to picturesque little squares decorated with carefully tended flowers and plants. A tour also allows you to visit an old hospital and a clock tower. In this way, you can structure your visit around architectural history, small squares and views of the landscape without limiting yourself to a single attraction. Montepescali railway station is located on the Livorno–Rome and Grosseto–Siena railway lines.

A Place with a Distinctive Cultural Character

Montepescali is also associated with the Premio Nazionale di Poesia “Elisabetta Fiorilli”. The prize has been held in Montepescali since 1994 and today bears the name Elisabetta Fiorilli. Alongside churches, walls and ceramics, a literary tradition is therefore also part of the town's distinctive character.
