Giglio Porto combines arrival on the island of Giglio with historical discoveries, walking trails and excursions on the water. The town is particularly suitable for travelers who want to combine culture and activity without committing to just one type of vacation. When choosing your accommodation, Giglio Porto is therefore an interesting base for days by the sea, routes across the island and sightseeing around the harbor.

Getting to and Finding Your Way Around Giglio Porto

Giglio Porto is the island’s only harbor and the landing point for ferries from Porto Stefano. The crossing to Giglio Porto takes about one hour. Ferry services run daily year-round, with greater frequency in summer. This makes it possible to plan your journey at different times, while the harbor also remains the town’s clear geographical point of reference.

To prepare for walks, the Info-Park point at Via Provinciale 9 provides official maps for the trail networks of Giglio and Giannutri. Cala dello Smeraldo is also reachable on foot in ten minutes from the immediate surroundings of Giglio Porto. As another destination for your travel plans, you can also view Cala Spalmatoio.

Historic Sites Between Tower and Bay

One of the notable historical points of interest is the Torre del Saraceno. The tower was built in 1596 at the behest of Ferdinand I of Tuscany. From there, a footpath begins leading to the small beach cove of Caletta del Saraceno. At water level, the walls of a cetaria for breeding moray eels can be seen there. Parts of the Roman villa of the Domizii Enobarbi have also been preserved and remain visible at Caletta del Saraceno.

The Villa Marittima dei Domizi Enobarbi in Giglio Porto was built in the second half of the 1st century BC. Those interested in the long history of the Mediterranean region can include the tower, the path to the cove and the visible Roman remains as different stops in their daily plans. The Torre del Saraceno and the villa represent two clearly separate historical periods.

Walking Trails and Island Experiences

An easy walking route follows the ancient mule track paved with granite stones from Giglio Porto to Giglio Castello. From the path, there is a view of Arenella Beach. Those who want to combine a walk with a historic route and a scenic experience will find a specific opportunity to do so here.

Another official route leads from Giglio Castello via Cannelle Beach to Giglio Porto and connects the two towns. It runs along Cannelle Beach. Depending on what you want to include in your day, you can choose a route across the island or a walk with a connection to the beach, without equating the two routes.

Diving, Boat Trips and Maritime Traditions

In Giglio Porto, diving centers offer guided dives and diving courses for all levels of training. The barcaioli also take visitors by boat to beaches and coves that cannot be reached by other means. Island tours with swimming stops are also part of their offerings.

Local events also reflect the town’s maritime character. The Palio Marinaro dell’Isola del Giglio is a rowing regatta between the districts of Chiesa, Moletto and Saraceno in Giglio Porto. The Festa di San Lorenzo includes a procession on the sea in honor of the Madonna Stella Maris; the Festa di San Lorenzo is celebrated on August 10. In this way, Giglio Porto brings together harbor, history, trails and traditions for a varied island stay.
