Chiarone Scalo – Coast, Nature and Maremma Culture

Between Dunes and the WWF Oasis

Chiarone Scalo combines the flat coastal landscape of the southern Maremma with nature, cycling routes, historic buildings and regional cuisine. Le Dune del Chiarone is a flat coastal area protected by a dune system. The WWF Lago di Burano Oasis is located in the southern Maremma between Ansedonia and Chiarone, in the municipality of Capalbio. This means that different landscapes meet along this stretch of coast: dunes, sea and the wetland around Lago di Burano.

Nature at Lago di Burano

The nature trail of the WWF Lago di Burano Oasis offers a particularly tangible nature experience. It runs along the dune and includes seven observation points: six hides and an observation tower. The focus here is on the landscape along the dune and various designated observation points. Ultimaspiaggia beach is also part of the area's coastal landscape. Ultimaspiaggia is a beach resort in Località Chiarone Marina in Capalbio. The beach is characterized by light-coloured sand and extends to the nature reserve and the WWF Lago di Burano Oasis.

Coastal Cycling Routes and Underpasses

Chiarone Scalo is also connected to several described cycling routes. The “Itinerario tra Orbetello e la Costa d’Argento” cycling route reaches Chiarone Scalo and passes through the railway underpass to the SP Litoranea. Along the same route, the path runs beside the sea and Lago di Burano. Another connection is provided by the “Capalbio e i tesori della Costa d'Argento” route: in Chiarone Scalo, a new underpass leads back to the provincial Litoranea road.

Towers, Art and Historic Sites

The Torre di Buranaccio is an important cultural landmark. It stands on a coastal tombolo separating the sea from the wetland. The tower has a square floor plan, and its walls are two to three metres thick. In the regional surroundings of Chiarone Scalo, Garavicchio is also home to the Giardino dei Tarocchi, a creation by the artist Niki de Saint Phalle. In the village of Chiarone on the Via Aurelia is the Palazzo del Chiarone. In earlier centuries, it served as a customs post for traffic between two states. Together with the Giardino dei Tarocchi and the Torre di Buranaccio, this part of the surrounding area shows that a trip to Chiarone Scalo need not be limited to the beach and nature.

Maremman Cuisine and Local Events

The regional side includes the Sagra della Lumaca e della Cucina Maremmana. Its announced menu includes snail dishes as well as Maremma specialities, including tortelli, rosticciana, acquacotta and fagioli al fiasco. In the Chiarone Scalo area, the event was planned at Circolo Il Mare, with food stalls scheduled to open daily from 7:30 p.m. It was announced as the 43rd edition; its event status should therefore be understood as planned rather than as a permanent offering.
