Sant'Ellero: Between Railway History and Vallombrosa
Accommodation in Sant'ellero
Sant'Ellero combines an unusual railway history with a present-day route through the Valdarno landscape. The restored trekking route between Sant'Ellero–Saltino and Vallombrosa is approximately 8.5 kilometres long and leads from the valley floor of the Valdarno to the Vallombrosa Biogenetic Nature Reserve. If you would like to combine cultural history and physical activity, you will find a clearly defined route here with several options: you can use the path on foot, by bicycle including e-bike, or by running.
In the Footsteps of the Rack Railway
The path follows the historic trackbed of the rack railway that once connected Sant'Ellero with Vallombrosa. The railway operated from 25 September 1892 to 18 April 1924. The present-day route is therefore not only a connection through the landscape, but also an entry point into a specific chapter of the region's transport history. The former trackbed has been converted into a path suitable for hikers, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts. Depending on the mode of transport you choose, the same historic route can be experienced in different ways, without the cultural dimension of the route receding into the background. Nine information panels are available for orientation along the way. Their content is devoted to historical, natural-history and technical topics. The route thus offers several layers: it passes through a landscape of significance, follows the former route of the rack railway and supplements the path with information about nature and technology. Especially when travelling with different interests, these three perspectives can structure the outing without requiring different destinations to be combined. From the Valdarno to the Vallombrosa Trail Area
Upon arriving in Vallombrosa, the route provides direct access to the Vallombrosa Trail Area. The connection therefore ends not only at a historic destination, but also leads into an area associated with further outdoor experiences. For your planning, the clear route connection is particularly important: Sant'Ellero–Saltino–Vallombrosa describes the course, while the approximately 8.5 kilometres indicate the documented length of the restored trekking route. The journey to the starting point can also be taken into consideration. Thanks to the proximity of Sant'Ellero railway station, travellers can reach the starting point of the path from Florence and then continue on foot or by bicycle. In addition to using the path itself, this provides a travel option without an immediate switch to motorised transport. An additional cultural trace is an object made of repoussé and engraved silver as well as gilded copper, originating from the church of Santa Maria a Ellero and dating from the late 17th century.More Places to Choose From
