Ostina – History, Village Structure and Balze

Ostina is a destination for you if you want to combine historical traces with a distinctive landscape and a clearly described circular trail. The small village preserves its history not only in individual buildings but also in its layout: Two central, narrow lanes reveal the surviving traces of Castelnuovo, the formerly walled fortified settlement.

Castle, Castelnuovo and San Tommaso

The first written mention of Ostina Castle dates back to 1060. The old castle was conquered and razed to the ground in 1305. The new village of Ostina, Castelnuovo, was then established near the Church of San Tommaso. An expansion of this Castelnuovo and its church in 1314 is also documented. In the 1427 land registry, Castelnuovo appears as a walled fortified settlement. The development can be read during a walk through the village as a sequence of different historical traces. The ruins interpreted as Ostina’s “Castelvecchio” consist of a few sections of crumbling walls. Opposite them stands San Tommaso, a preserved sacred building. The church dates from the 12th century; its façade and masonry retain their original appearance. Thus, in Ostina, documented history, ruins and a still clearly recognizable village layout lie closely together, without this having to become a large museum complex.

The Anello di Ostina and the Balze

For active days, the Balze trail network is an appealing option. It includes the Anello di Ostina circular trail, designated as R25. Starting from Ostina, the trail leads into the area of the Balze, described as particularly impressive. After a small pass, the Anello di Ostina reaches the valley of the Rio di Luco. Later, it leads to the Buca di Gabriello near Gretaio; the trail description mentions a possible rest stop there. The Balze are erosion-formed structures with steep vertical walls, rocky pinnacles and earth pyramids. These formations give the trail its distinctive landscape theme: they are not merely a general viewpoint, but a clearly articulated relief. Around Ostina, the Balze also form a heterogeneous habitat that provides refuge for numerous birds, mammals and insects. Another religious connection

Ostina also has a special spiritual tradition. The apparitions of the Madonna della Riconciliazione in Ostina have taken place on the last Sunday of every even month since July 10, 1993. This date adds a religious connection reaching into the present day to the older history of the castle, Castelnuovo and San Tommaso.
